My question is why can't anyone make a quality spincast reel? i don't think there is a market for them. i don't know of one serious or even semi-serious angler that uses anything other than baitcast. a few years ago, I think it was zebco, marketed a premium spincast, but I think they discontinued it

with baitcast and spinning reels you can feather the line with your finger on spinning or thumb on casting and control the casting distance, and with spincast you can just push the button , cast and watch it fly = no control and thanks guys for the compliment on my previous replys

Roadtrip--if you ever have a chance, pick up an old Abu Garcia 170 or 290 spincast model. Both very sturdy, smooth..dual line pickups, oscillating winding cup to lay the line across the spool like a casting reel does.. good drag systems, anti-reverse.. Both were made in Sweden, when all Garcia was still made in Sweden. The 170 was re-introduced some while back, but stay with the older Swedish model.
The synchro-drag is very cool--preset your drag, then when you need it, just release the handle..the fish will pull out against the drag..when ready to reel again, just take the handle and reel.
They came from the factory pre-spooled with 15 and 20 pound test, and could quite easily handle it and the fish.
jfred--With both these reels, you can feather with the button, they both were made that way, just a little practice needed. I can feather some with a finger also, just takes getting used to. There is no reason a caster cannot place a lure just where it is wanted with these reels.
There are a couple of occasions where I use the 290 spincast. It is very good for the skipping under a dock or hanging limb, or for lighter lures, and it comes in handy at night for bank fishing around a pond.
Either of these reels will do anything a similar sized spinning reel can do or handle.
I use primarily my Lews' BB1, Garcia 5000c, or Shakespeare President casting reels, but if the specific situation suggests, I will pick up one of the spincasters. The Shakespeare is around 1980, Garcia a late 60s , and the Lews is from the 70s.
Both the spincasters are also around 40 years or so old, in excellent working order.

I don't know if this is appropriate but I bought my son a nice Daiwa open face spinning reel. He was less than pleased because he said that he had always had problems with that type of reel. The first chance we had to fish together I saw why he was having problems. He's right handed and used to the Spincast type reels. He was using the rig by positioning the reel atop the rod and attempting to reel backward with his right hand. It took about a minute to switch the reel to left hand configuration. Problem solved . He really enjoys the rig now. I have seen this any number of times, even in ads. Anyway, I'm just saying. Hope this is at least amusing if not helpful. J.B.

It has been my experience that some lures will foul hook when cast with a spinning rig. As a rule, I use two different weight baitcasters most of the time. About 30% of the time I use a spinning rig. If I am bank fishing I like to use a spincaster as to keep the dirt out of the reel. 1.Remember, if you are using a baitcaster and casting overhead, cant the reel in your hand about 90%deg. so you will maintain good control of the braking. 2.Start out with a lighter line, 10-15lb. and a more flex able rod. 3.Be sure you reel is properly cleaned and lubed. Practice, Practice, Practice

J.B., I will always remember one time I saw Yul Brynner in a movie, he was using a spinning rig the same way, upside down and backward. Waiting on the dock for some spy or the other to show up.

to me its all about situational fishing... I jig, dropshot, etc, with a spinning outfit while I crank and spinnerbait, etc with a baitcaster

I use a Shimano Citica baitcaster. I honestly find the baitcaster way easier to aim into tight spaces. My biggest pet peeve with spinner reels is that if I try to control the distance by engaging the stop, the line rebounds and I don't get that cast right where I want it. With my baitcaster, I can use my thumb to control my distance to land it right where I need it, without getting that rebound. However, a fishing friend of mine will argue that statement since he can use a spinner much more efficiently than a baitcaster. All personal preference.

Small baits=spinning Big baits=baitcaster. I prefer spinning when I wanna be lazy and not have to worry about backlash's.

I always end up with tangled line and a mess when using spinning rods. Too much line twist. Throw the end of your line in the water without tackle while you idle along. When all the line is out, reel back in to eliminate line twist.

I use a baitcaster for crank baits and larger lures. I use spinning reels for lighter tackle. Recently when using a rooster tail or other small spinning lures, I will tie a double barrel swivel with 1 foot leader on it. This has greatly reduced line twist for me. Also I found that when I start getting loops in my spinning reels it is because I am not holding tension on line before retrieval. This causes line to reel loosely and next cast looks like my spool exploded. I cant stand to use a spin cast anymore, but I have noticed that you can control distance on them by pressing thumb button again to line.

I can't use a casting reel worth a damn, always end up birds nesting the line. Try this link from Chad's site: http://www.learntocatchcatfish.com/casting-baitcast-reel-learning-cast/It may take some practice, but these tips help you start off your set up with the best balance for casting, and shows you what jfred was talking about. Hope this helps! Steven
