I'm picking my boat up next week and need get out on the water to break in it. I haven't had a boat since moving to College Station so I don't know any of the lakes around here.

I'd like to go somewhere with enough space to ride around and put some hours on the motor without having to go in circles but also be able to fish some. Something similar to lake Travis. You could follow the river there and ride forever. Real deep, no trees and if you pay attention you can avoid the rocks.

I was thinking Conroe or Somerville but I've never been there. Both look long and deep enough to get out ride. I want to fish start fishing there anyway. Are there a lot of stumps or other things to look out for on either lake or could I just get out in the middle, watch the depth and ride?

Any advice?

Somerville is pretty safe all over. You'll see the trees where they are present. Conroe is safe south of 1197 i think it is. Above that you could get in trouble in certain areas. Conroe is tough to fish, but you have a shot at a trophy on every cast. Somerville can be fun when the water is cold and a little easier to fish. Both would be good for what your wanting to do. Somerville is only half the drive.

Somerville would be easy. Nothing really to watch out for.

Nearest thing to Travis is lake Belton, but that is an hour and a half. Lake Bryan is close, super safe, but you would be going in circles. After a few hours of fishing the rip rap out there driving in circles might seem fun.

I've been to Lake Bryan, that's why I didn't bring it.

Sounds like Somerville is the way to go.

I say bring it to Lake Travis and pick me up on the way. We can start off at the damn and drive 15 plus miles up river to Paleface Park. Nice drive and lots of fishing spots along the way. I just fished a tournament there this past weekend. Fishing is good!! Send me a PM if interested.
