Josh! Use a rod of a least 7 ft. or longer with a good sturdy baitcast reel or Med. to Hvy. Spinning outfit loaded with no less than 20 lb. test line. You will need the heavy line because a lot of the hanging up you will do will be other fishing line that someone has already snagged up. Those folks use some heavy duty line and sometimes 20 lb. isn't enough. Use a hook that you can straighten out when you have to pull on it helps also. Use a cast net and catch shad or small perch and also chicken livers or shrimp and wade out about waist to chest deep and cast as far as you can then with the reel in free spool walk back to the shore and place the rod in a holder. If you have a bait clicker set it or set your drag so that if you get a fish on you can tighten the drag and fight the fish in. Also try circle hooks because you don't have to break your neck trying to get to the rod to set the hook. The fish will do it for you. That is the basic fish for whatever approach. Now if you are strickly after bass I'd stay around the reed bed edges and wade around the outer edges and cast into the little cuts and opening with a Texas rigged plastic worm black and chartruse tail. Also a rattle trap cast around the outer edges of the reeds and off the main point by the dead tree if you wade out in the direction of the power plant there is an old submerged bridge that used to produce a lot of fish for me in the past but the bank fishermen regulars consider that area prime, so don't count on getting that spot unless you get there early. Hope this helps! Good fishin! Jimbo

Josh, I have a small kayak and was wondering if Braunig would be worth trying out the kayak on. Sounds like most bank fishing you are talking about requires wading so maybe a kayak would work? Thanks for all the previous info!

KUJO. I'd have to agree with part of your statement. I think both Calaveras and Braunig have become Redfish and Catfish lakes. Neither are the lakes of the past where you could catch hundreds of crappie and some of the best bass fishing in this part of the state at one time in the early 80's. I remember going up to the concession stand with a seven pound bass and thought the guy would take my picture. (Back then they took pictures and put it in the local paper sports page). Ha Ha it barely got a second look, there were so many that where brought in that were bigger. Probably the way Fork is now.
dosxx. Braunig is perfect for fishing out of a kayak around those reed beds. I saw a guy out on Calaveras that paddles out to the crappie wall and sets the kayak on top of the wall and fishes there. He's braver than me. Good fishin! Jimbo

Oh yeah. Did I just mention "Crappie Wall" Well they didn't name it that for nothing. You can't catch a crappie there now to save your life. Now they need to change the name to "Redfish Wall" it would be more fitting.

Kujo, I have a one man Kayak. If you have one we should set up something to go explore the lakes and see what kind of damage we could do!

Jimbo, what kind of rod, reel & line would you recommend if I was going to fish out of my kayak? The same as mentioned before or could I go lighter? What is the panfishing like. I got a 5 wt. fly rod. Thanks again for all your useful knowledge.

Dosxx. I think you and KUJO need to get together. He is an expert on the Guadelupe and in my opinion would be a perfect place to use a kayak. Man! a fly rod and light tackle and a refreshing hillcountry stream with not a jet ski in sight are made to order.
