Okay, is it fish move to deeper water in winter because the water is warmer there or fish move to deeper water in summer because the water is cooler there or both?
I am so confused?!?!?!

A little of both. Fish usually move deeper in the winter cause thats where the bait is, same can be said in the summer but fish can also be VERY shallow cause of the dissolved oxygen

I also have gotten confused.I always thought,deeper in winter,and when the sun is up they are in the shallows cause it warms up faster.In summer,deeper again but shallows before the sun is up,then back to the deep.Confused yes I am.

In summary...when in doubt fish deep or extremely shallow or fish the medium depths...then you need to fish structure or grass or current or the windy points...hmm

Winter, water below 50 degrees, fish deep. The deeper water tends to stabilize temperature wise. Top layer will cool several degrees at night and stay below 50. Water below 25-27ft will stay about 51-53 and that's where the shad will be. Shad don't like water below 48-50.
Summer, if the lake has a thermocline usually about 10-12ft. fish above the thermocline. Even though that water may be 88, that's where the most oxygen is to allow fish to survive. Deeper water is cooler but less oxygen. You'll find the shad in that top layer also.
This applies to TX lakes. Water up north is much colder and different fish species.

Water temp last week was 46 degrees. Fish were caught in a foot and a half deep water. It won the tourney on Toledo.

I've always thought that heat rises, as the surface cools the cooler water sinks to the bottom and the warmer water rises. In the winter the temp is about the same from top to bottom, unless the sun is out warming the water up the the surface will be slightly warmer. In the summer there is a big difference because all of the hot water stays on top, and the deeper water stays cooler. That's what has always made sense to me.

I am so confused?!?!?! During the summer there is a thermocline where they water is cooler below the thermocline. In the fall the lake stratifies and the water turns over, whereby the cooler water is on the surface. As the winter gets colder, the water on the surface also gets colder, and the water below the thermocline actually becomes warmer than the surface water. Make Sense?

The general rule is to fish deeper in the winter & summer but grass changes that rule. I have caught em good at Fork in 3' of water in 48 degrees on a spinnerbait or a Trap but it was near good healthy hydrilla. Summertime the same. Yes I fish deeper in the summer months but I usually start very shalloow early in the morning to get the topwater bite around the grass. One of the largest bass I have ever seen caughtwas on a buzzbait right at dark on a 100 degree day in July in 5' but it was in the grass. The water temp was about 91 that eve.
The best advice is this: Stop reading about all the rules and habits of the fish and GO FISHING!

During the winter deep water stays a more constant even if it is cold. For example the water on the surface at lake x is 44 degrees and 25 foot down it is 44 degrees, a big cold front pushes through and drops the surface to 39 but the deep stuff stays 44. It is a lot easier for fish to hang in a constant cold temp than an ever changing cold temp. When the sun really shines and warms the surface they will come up to sun and soak in the rays, that is why fishing vertical banks in the winter is good so they don't have to move far to get that warmth when available.
Once again staying at those Holiday Inn Expresses make me smarter every time!

I caught catfish on Lavon in two feet of water year round for three years straight and it didn't matter if it was 20 degrees or 110 degrees then the lake dropped 18ft and it was never the same for me after that. I have been bass fishing for the last two years on Fork and for the last month all my fish have been in 1-6 feet even in 44 degree water and no where near a drop. I go from place to place and search because every fish seems to have his own agenda and rules to live by.
