the catfishing in the pits the last cpl weeks has been slow.i have caught 4 20lb 3 15lbs and several smaller 4-8lb blues in about 6 times of fishing. turtles are kinda bad right now with your bait. all i have been using has been live perch or dead after the turtles found them. the smaller ones are agressive while the bigger ones has been taking the bait almost as slow as a turtle. not sure what else to try for them out there. in the past i have used cut perch dead shad and liver for them with poorer results in the spring. you can only fish during the day since they close at dark . any suggestions on a different bait that may work better? i know the fish i caught are good size blues but i hate to sit for 5 hours for one bite while warding the turtles away lol. the pits are very low right now and most of my bites has come from close but not in the deepest hole there. take care all if you go to these pits have rods big enough to handle the fish and dont tight line or you will lose your rod out there lol ask the guy last week who lost his while fishing with minnows lol take care all good fishing

Mark I just dont go out there until it gets cold and the turtles have gone away plus the catfish bite seems to be better. I have had my best luck using shad out there in about 40 or 50 degree weather.

went out again no bites but fish much for catfish found a area holding crappie and caught around 40 or so but only 4 or 5 big enough to keep. once the rain hit the crappie quit and never started back up so i left at least knowing some crappie are in the main tank out there.

I grew up in Lancaster and we used to go out there to shoot guns. I had no idea there were fish on those gravel pitts. How did they get there? The only thing I could think is when the Trinity floods. I also heard they have found aligators in that area of the trinity. Does anyone know if thats true.

There is a pit close to the ones that we fish that are marked stay out because of Alligators so I am not sure if their are some or not. I would be scared to try and find out!!!

most of the bigger catfish that r in the pits were put there. ive talked to the owner he has been trot lining the trintiy for 40-50 years and what he caught he threw in the pits for people to catch. now it has a good population of big blues and alps in there. as far as gators never saw one there but like j said the is a habitat so they post for a gator perserve about 1-2 miles from the trinty off of beltline rd.
take care all
