It didn't seem like I was meant to fish today. I started off on the wrong foot by checking the weather forecast for San Antonio, the night before. Key problem, San Antonio. I figured what's the difference? Try close to 20mph winds, as opposed to 8mph winds. Canoe's and wind don't mix. I took Bassman's advice (thanks again!), and put in at Calliham. Headed left towards the old road bed/point. Caught a couple 13-14 inchers. Caught the pictured 3 1/2 pounder below off those sticks at the road bed. Wind picked up, and I quickly realized I had to take cover. Fished a little while on the backside of the jetty, caught a few more small ones, and then decided to call it quits around 11am. Everything caught pitching a watermelon Big bite Cane stick. The bass would dart out from the clumps of grass to hammer it. It was fun for the couple hours I was out there.

Nice report. You are a brave man going out in a canoe on that lake. There are gators bigger than your canoe!

Good fishin Kyle. I went out on Dunlap yesterday and the wind was whipping through there pretty good so I can only imagine what you were dealing with. I may upgrade to a 10 lb or heavier anchor to hold a little better.

Nice Fish and a very good job. Wind can play a major factor especially in a canoe.

You need to PM me and I will show you a way to modify that canoe so it will be more stable in the wind. God forbid you fall out of that canoe in that lake. Can you say gator bait! I have had a lot of gators just pop up on me out of that thick grass. I never knew they were there until they surfaced like 15 feet from the boat! Im just saying...
I would put in at South Shore and hit that small cove right next to the dam. And if the wind is ok just hit the south shoreline next to the big ramp and work it all around that point.

Here you go this is a good site for a do it yourself stabilizer. Mine had the really large swim noodles and 1-1/2" cross members and it help up for a really long time. http://www.ehow.com/way_5486458_homemade-canoe-stabilizer.html

Thanks for the link Skeeter. I'm pretty comfortable in a canoe. I've been fishing in one for about 17 years now. And I'm used to fishing around gators in south Ga in the canoe....but, with that said, there's nothing wrong with a little more stability. And it looks like I could configure that so I could take it off and on as needed for weather, or cast netting, etc.

Those cane sticks work pretty good at choke dont they? I like to use em too when it is windy, in place of a weightless senko. I usually rig them on a 1/8 to 1/4 screw lock worm weight. I like to flip them around grass lines and reed patches. Never caught anything too big on em, but lots of numbers!

They did work pretty good. I think I could have caught some good numbers if I had been out there longer. I was wondering? How is the bite around the grass towards the end of November? Are the fish still in shallow? I guess it would depend on the temps. I'm asking, because that will be when I'm able to get out there again.

I wanna say the grass is about gone in November?? I fished a tourney sometime in November last year and I don't recall the hydrilla being around then... But then again, we are halfway through october so who knows...
I will be fishing the grass again saturday... Gonna pick up some punch weights to get through the grass similar to the way I was doing last weekend!! Think braid will be a must for this situation... Got a little lucky a few fish didn't break my line last weekend pulling them outta the grass with the 20lb big game...
Tight lines, guys!

Hey Kyle46N,
Don't for a moment think that you are the first (and you won't be the last) to be screwed by a wind forecast. The weatherman is hardly ever right when it comes to predicting the wind. If I had a dollar for every time I have read 5 to 10 mph winds and it turned into 15 to 20, I would be have a lot more money in my pocket.

Every trip I have ever made to choke has been interrupted by weather or wind that was not in the forecast. One of these days I will make it down there on a pretty day...one day.
FISH ON!! <'///><

Best way to figure out what the wind speed will be is take the forecast, say 5-10 mph and add the two numbers together (15 mph) and usually that is what it is going to be. At least thats what it seems like when I go. LOL

Tight lines, guys! The grass shouldnt be completely gone by november. In actuality, the grass never completly disappears at choke under normal yearly weather conditions. The weather is not too cold in south tx for most of Nov and it can actually be some of the best time to go fishing. Now, the grass may not be matted all the way to the top at certain times, but there is usually hydrilla year round.
