I have a 2007 Yamaha 225hp 2-stroke on my boat and speedometer stopped working. I looked at my lower unit to unclog the speedometer hole and was wondering if it was the hole infront of the bullet "gear case" or if this hole is not suppose to be there. I thought the speedometer hole was between the bullet and the top of the lower unit. Here's a pic to show what I'm talking about. My question is, is this hole suppose to be there?

That is where it is supposed to be, but it appears the hole is much larger than normal in the pic.

Thanks and i think that pic may look deceptive and will try to post another one tonight. I just wanted to make sure becuase i hit a stump at idle and saw this hole when i pulled my boat out of the water. Just wanting to make sure there was already a hole there and i didnt just knock one in. Thanks for the answer and will post a better picture later.

It's called a Pitot Tube and yes, it should be there. you probably have some debris from the stump blocking it and that is what caused you to lose speedo. Take a very small drill bit and put in the tube BY HAND, GENTLY rotate to remove the debris.

fwiw, I've never had a speedo on any of my boats stay working very long. That pitot tube gets clogged so easily. I simply ignore the speedo and use the GPS on my Bird. Much more accurate ground speed anyway.

Thanks again for the answers and cleaned the whole out with a 1/16 drill bit. Figured it was my speedo hole but thought I would check since the only ones I have seen are between the gear case and the top of the lower unit on the front area. Thanks again and speedo's workin...

I think all Yamaha have the same problem with that pitot hole!

I have owned 3 Yamaha's, all with same problem.
