For a 998 what are the best settings or just leave it as is out of the box?

Ususally OOB factory settings are fine, but you may need to slow down the SI Chart speed between 2-4. I run my 898 at 4 in chart speed, 12 in sensitivity, and all the rest at defaults. If structure looks "stretched" then slow down the chart speed even more.

Best settings to start with: Slow steady Boat Speed - slowest idle speed. Scroll Speed: 2 to 4 (try to match boat speed or slightly slower) Sensitivity: 8 to 12 higher for soft bottom lower for hard bottoms Area of Coverage: Start at 100' SI Enhance: Off for clearest images Low or Med to see fish easier Here's a clip on Start-up with SI: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCMLTlMDDGQ
