So would you say Squaw Creek is fishing as expected with this heat.

Reading alot of reports lately about zero to a few fish per trip. Was this the case 10 years ago in the summer time? With the majority of the fish being caught only in the upper ends of the lake?

I knew the bite would be off. It was the same way back in the day.
Most of the people who fished it back then quit fishing there in March or April as the spawn was on all around Texas. People have had high expectations of this lake and they will come true starting around November.

When I used to fish it this time of year before it closed I would stop bass fishing at about 9 and go for catfish. During the winter the bass fishing is great!

It always fished very tough in the summer. I had spent plenty of time on it in May. We used to catfish it a bunch then, but would always bass fish for a bit each time we were there. We would always catch some, but not like it was when we fished the Fun-N-Sun tourney. We never had that many fish and that many boats around us catching that many fish. Back then there wasn't really anyone on the lake either.
Once the fall gets here we will really see how the lake is doing. If that tournament was any indication, I can't wait. But don't expect to go out there and whack a bunch of big fish. That lake was never a big fish lake. Just a bunch of 4lbrs in that lake. It always took 22-25 or so to win any big tournament. When you could mix in a couple 6's or a 7. I did have 27lbs down there one time though. Biggest I ever got out of there was a 9.

Not nearly as many fishermen not catching fish during the summer ten years ago....because there were not 100 boats in line to fish it in the summer. I found surface temps from 88F in the upper end to 100F by the dam friday at Squaw Creek. Thats not the kind of temps condusive to fast bass fishing. No line at Monticello last friday. I wonder why? The fish are still there also.

We really got lucky in the Fun-N-Sun tournament and ended up at the right place at the right time. By all accounts if we wouldn't have ended up in the river it would have been a long day. I had the best day of fishing I can ever remember for numbers and size considering we boated around 60 four to five pounders. I think if the tournament would have been a few weeks later it would have been a different story all together. The temp in that river came up almost 10 degree's in 2 weeks. It was never a summer lake so I think whats happening right now is completely normal for this time of year. Like others said I won't go back till the cooler months but you can bet I will be out there every chance I get this winter!!!

I loved fishing squaw in the summer. Me and my dad would get off of work and be fishing by 4:30. We would always do very well in the afternoons but back then we could fish till 9 in the evening. The best thing about it was we would have the lake to ourselves. They can be caught all summer, they stack up big time. We would tie off to the same tree and catch them every cast. The morning bite would always die by 10am in the summer. The bigger fish do get hard to find in the summer, but i'd rather catch a 100 2 to 4lbers then a few bigger ones. I just wish they would keep it open till 9pm like they used to, but I'll take what they are giving. A little Squaw Creek is better then none.Lol

when the lake first got fished in early May unit 1 was just coming out of a outage, the lake was only being heated by one side in April. As the heat rose the fishing started to fade. the fish in the main lake all went deep.

All of this sudden pressure has to effect them. I saw 6 boats just going down the same bank bass fishing. Now that just looks ridiculous and the bass have to think ,what the ***!

I used to fish Squaw Creek every summer for the last 3-4 years it was open. I would say it was a great fishery. No early morning bass bite, but after 8:30-9:00 am the fish would just turn on. My partner and I would easily catch 50-60 bass every time we went. Hardly ever more than 2-3 other bass boats on the lake, just a few cat fishermen. Most people thought you couldn't catch them at Squaw Creek in the summer, but they were all wrong. We just went up to the North end and caught fish all day long.
