For some reason my boat battery won't charge. I have a trolling motor, depth finder/gps, and my big motor hooked up to it. The battery is maybe a little over a year old. Seems like lately it won't take a charge with the charger set on 2amp overnight. Any ideas?

Do the math. 2 Amp X 12 hours = 24 Amp/hours. Your battery should be 100amp/hours minimum. You are not charging it enough. You need to up the amps or charge longer. That is if you have not ruined the battery by not charging it back to full capacity and then running it down repeatedly.

I use an external charger. A friend of mine recommended to me to always use 2amp (trickle charge) because it is better for the battery. I will try and charge on 6amp and see what happens. Yes, I may have already ruined the battery......thanks for yalls help!

The 2 amp slow charge should not hurt the battery but takes a
long time to get it charged, Check the simple stuff first
sometimes the connections are bad, I had rust corroded battery
cables on mine this spring and couldn't find a problem until
I removed all wires and cleaned up everything good, Now it works
as it should, I use a seperate batery for motor starting and
two deep cycle's for trolling motor and acc'ys such as bilge
pump live well bait tank depth sounders etc. A Bad connection
can give you fits. Then there is always the bad battery.

Check the water level. It could be dry cells.

Well I been here, watching the water rise over my dock walkway
for the second time this year, after being 3 ft over full on
18th of april, lake got back down to full pool level May 10
we have now rec'd over 3 1/2 inches rain last couple days and
the lake is now 15 inches over full and still coming up, Haven't
got much fishing done yet this spring and water is very muddy.
I wonder how many fish we lost over the spillway this year.
But on the good side the boat is ready to go when I can get to
it. But I still like it here. Take care

I left the key on in my truck awhile back and ran the battery completely down. My 10 amp automatic charger would not even show it was charging even after several hours. I assumed the battery was no good and took it to a Napa store. They checked it and said it was completely dead but was still good and to check back later that day and they would have it charged. They told me that alot of the newer chargers have an automatic shut off that will not let them charge a completely dead battery. I guess we never get to old to learn.

KG68 In the case of your dead battery not charging, a lot of
times It cycles off and on to get it to start charging with your
charger hook a 12 volt light up to it with the charger, then the
charger will start charging and gradually build up to where it
needs to be.

I think Jim sr. and zaspook nailed it. 2 amps overnight is not enough for a 12volt battery. 2 amps to top it off after its been fully charged is ok, but you need a 10 or 15 amp charger, that switches to a monitor mode after it's full. After ruining a couple of batteries myself by putting too little charge with a cheapie charger I've decided its just not worth it to go the cheap route on a charger. Go buy a good high quality charger and it will pay for itself in a season or two, if your going though batteries that fast. A good battery should easily last you 3 summers, maybe more. I love my minnkota 3 bank charger, it works great and my batteries are around 2 years old now, still going strong.

1st I would get a starter battery and then I would turn up the charge also check the water levels unless it is sealed if oyu can charge it on a high level and then maintain it with the trickel 2amp charge to top it off.
