if it was on a television show would it be cheating? doesnt there have to be some kind of competition like a tourny?

My grandfather talks about John Fox. Apparently he cheated in a tournament. Some guys saw him placing fish in a cage. The GW waited for him to come back tournament day.

Another story is when he hosted a large tournament. People prepaid like they do now. Come tournament morning ol John was no where to be found. He pocketed the mnoney as the TD.

I was telling my grandpa about R.Rose, when he told me these stories. I think he's told me this story a few time...ya know how grandpas are!

I have seen the John Fox commercials on tv...I assume this is the same guy. You can google it...one article was on another fishing forum.

It was John Fox,

my dad used to fish with him when he'd come down to the basin for tournies there when i was a kid.

He had a show but the incident happened in a tourney as I remember the story,

The story goes he was under tremendous pressure from his sponsers to win and was forced to do it. My dad said he was on fish and would have more than likely won or placed anyway without cheating.

Don't remeber the lake or year exactly but my dad learned a lot from fishing with him and growing up he would tell me stories about techniques he learned from Mr. Fox.

The fish wouldn;t be biting and my dad would look around and see something and come up with a crazy scheme to trigger the fish into biting and tell me John Fox taught it to him.

One prime example is during mayflie season find a bank with a lot of willow trees and mayflies in them, pull up to the bank and shake the crud out of the trees knocking all of the mayflies in the water.

Sit back and wait, 20 minutes later all kinds of small fish would be hitting the flies in the water and the bass would move into feed on them, bingo you're catching fish.

I've never met the man directly or even ever remember seeing his shows (since i was so little when they went off the air).

But I owe tons of my fishing knowledge to him as he taught it to my dad and he taught it to me.

John is still around. I remember him from his Rayburn days, his television show, and his red, white, and blue Skeeter Wrangler. He was a real salesman and just pushed it too far. He resurfaced later in Florida. I saw him not long ago on Roland Martin.

I was told by one guy, that has a show, that he did it and that people did not want to just watch someone fish, they wanted to see fish get caught. He then said "welcome to Hollywood". I give all the respect to Bill Willcox for being able to be a true angler and being good at what he does, he put's most "tv" guy's to shame.

Thought I'd let you know my limited experience concerning John Fox.
Back in the "old days" There was a big fishing seminar coming to the Fort Worth Convention Center. The guest speaker was John Fox. There were probably 1000-1500 people in attendance.
Myself and a friend both heard him stand up there and say that this very week, he had just set a new lake record on Toledo Bend Reservoir with the new bait he was hyping.
The new bait was the Lunker Lure and of course all of us bought the heck out of stock that he had. This was right before the lure was on the market in stores. It was and still is an excellent lure.
Problem was that the SOB never set a new lake record, and didn't need to say that.
I have it on good authority that he was kicked out of more than one bass tournament at that time in the fishing industry and stayed out of sight for a long time.
Then he resurfaced marketing stupid lures on late night TV and now has a new TV fishing show. If I knew who carried the show I would let them know.
Probably wouldn't matter to the stations, but I swear, I don't know why anyone would have to lie about a hobby.
The man is a lying, cheating, scum bag and needs to go find "gameful" employment somewhere else.

I guess the man is trying to live up to his name

Good Luck

+10 on the part about Wilcox.

I will say I believe there are plenty of honest host out there. Scott Martin for example.
