What are some of the best ways to approach and fish acres of lily pads? Secondly, would you do the same for just a little patch here and there?

Fish every square inch of it. Mainly aim for the holes or pockets of water between groups of pads. Or just drag your frog right out over the middle of all of it.
Frogs, Swim baits, Swim Jigs, Senko

Last recommendations... Use braid!... Hand On!...

+1

Also if you have a fish rise or boil under a pad when you are frogging, you can have a subtle colored 5" senko rigged weightless to make a follow up cast that will usually get you hooked up. Even if there are just a few scattered pads in an area, attacking them with your frog rig and really disturbing the vegetation in their area can really tick them off into blasting your bait.

personally I like shallow running cranks in pads you get some crazy action off a crank pulled threw pads. Just reel it pretty fast

I main line the maroon koolaide

Fluke or a weightless senko are my favorite. If you find a patch of pads with some fairly clear areas try running a buzzbait through there early in the morning.

listen for the bull bream slurping the surface... bait means predators(bass) are around...

find points or indints, or ones with deeper water. if you find isolated patches beat the hell outta them.

Try a Johnson's Silverspoon with a white Kalin grub trailer. Bass can't resist it, and it will stay just below the pads.
