Could be a few things, low voltage on batteries or starter.

Pull the cowling and see if the starter is turning when you engage, if so it could be just the starter drive needs attention, usually a little WD-40 will do the trick. If it doesn't turn then either the starter is bad or the solenoid is bad, as stated above could also be voltage related. My 90 recently did the same thing and it was the solenoid. bg

you could try jumping the solenoid with a couple of screwdrivers (make sure the handles are insulated). this will tell you if it's bad.

ok, thanks. batteries are all brand new and fully charged. i tried different ones just to make sure. this problem started about a month ago. you could keep turning the key and finally it would start. now it wont do anything but click. ill see if the starter is engaging but i dont think it is.

bad connection/ground, check the heavy wires to the engine and see if they are corroded at all clean if necessary and make sure the battery connections are all tight. sounds like its arcing to make the connection and then starting. next would be the starter and connections/solenoid.

ok, went to the boat today. wires to the engine are tight. i was tightening them and the wrench hit across to the positive and negative wire and it tried to start. so is it the silenoid? the starter seemed to work fine there, and were is the silonoid? see where the black and red wires connect, when my wrench hit both of those the starter engaged. here are some pics of the motor.

mine is doing the same thing but it sparks at the starter and blows the circuit... any response on how both of us can fix our problems.

I just replaced my solenoid and my motor works now. By the way, Bass Pro sells the solenoid for 49.07 and my wife found it online (next-tag) or something like that. It was only 22 and change. I had to wait a week, but it works now. I put it on last night. I have a 75hp (2001) so it looks a little different, but I would guess that you have a solenoid problem.

if you arced the two connections the solenoid is bad, the fact it tried to start is the give away. new solenoid time, its the one where the two wires are connected that arced.
