Im new to the forum, so Im sorry if this subject has been brought up. I started fishing for stripers below Lock & Dams 4-5 on the Red River back in the early 90s when they opened up. The Striper fishing was slow in the Tainer gates behind the dam , but I caught the heck out of the Blues in there on 3-4-5 ounce spoons. Just wondering if anybody else uses artificial baits when fishing for Blues

I have caught a few blues while targeting other species,
but not consistantly.

Mo,

It's a very weird situation. The Blues stay in the Tainer gates, and the Stripers stay in the Henge gates. This best Blue fishing for me is in July when the river is low, and clear. Since Im using a spoon I need clear water for the Blues to see it, when the water is high and muddy it doesnt work well. I look forward to making, and posting a video of it this summer.

Mexicajun1,

That's very interesting. I read a article one time, where a gentlemen was down rigging Crawfish color Big O's, and catching huge Flatheads.

I know a few guys target rip rap and rocks with crank baits for flatties.

We catch some big blues on Tawakoni in the summer downrigging stump jumpers for stripers. Sometimes it turns a slow striper day into a good trip.

I've caught a few slabbing for sandbass but not many. It's a nice surprise when I do though.

we always nail a few 10-15 lb'ers every year while slabbing sandies.
My biggest freshwater fish ever was a huge blue @ Lewisville
on a slab. estimated 40-45 lb's

I can't wait until July so I can make a video of it. Kind of funny how time changes things. Twenty years ago, I wouldn't even tell my wife how to do it. Now, I'm ready to post it on a fishing forunm for my Texas friends.lol

I caught a huge 18 pound flathead out of lake arlington several years back...trolling a hell-pet combo for sandies and hybrids. It hit a DD-22 crankbait I was using instead of a hellbender...thought I was hung up at first, until I felt a swoosh of the tail...then it was kinda like reeling in a heavy log with short bursts of energy...helped that I caught it in opoen water...only had 14 pound test on...killed the motor and just let it have it's way...5-10 minutes later I was able to get a net under it after it had worn itself out...I just kept praying that whatever it was would not come off or hang up and break off...

It made for a great fish fry...
