I know that this has been talked about and talked about, but I don't frequent this site very often and surely don't keep up with the latest or greatest. But my all time favorite reel was bought in 1994, a Ouantum Energy, E400, 5.1:1, 3BB/1RB. at a cost of about $90.oo.. I could cast 50-75 feet futher with this reel than any other that I ever owned.
My question is this; I want a casting reel in the same 5to1 ratio, that can cast like this old reel does. Also, I don't want to spend more than a hundred bucks on it. I read several reviews on the David Fritts reels from BPS and from what I gathered it was very much like my old Quantum. And by the way, I've had a couple of other Quantum Energy reels and they just didn't do it either. So what do I buy,?

In that price range the BPS reels may be your best bet. Also, most of their reel lines now offer a cranking model so you are not just limited to the David Fritts.

I was lucky and found an older Citica that was 5:1. Spent a few $'s to upgrade to ABEC7 SS bearings. With the bearings, I can't tell the difference in my Citica's that range from this older one to my newest model Citica.

If you liked the Quantum and it is still functioning, might want to clean it up and upgrade the bearings. The ABEC7's helped all my reels noticeably.

Yeah, my old Quantum gets a cleaning every year by John's Tackle Shop in Neiderwall, Tx. Just a bump in the road, but John does a great job on reel cleaning for $13.00 apiece.

I use the Fritts 4.7:1 reel for throwing big, deep cranks like a DD-22. I absolutely love it. I can throw one of those big bruisers all day on it and not get tired at all. For those big deep runners I highly recommend it.

When I checked on BPS website, they do not list the Fritts reels except a left hand model. I wonder if they have been discontinued?

If you are interested in casting rang look for rods that are well built. Often times they are are spline witch is like a backbone for the rod which will give you a lot more power in the rod.

The US Reel Supercaster is supposed to cast a long way because of the design of the levelwind. They usually run around $200, BUT this year they came out with one that is under $100 and the spool turns the normal direction. The Levelwind isn't adjustable on this one though. I seen one at Bass Pro in Grapevine. Thay Cast far "supposdly" but I dont know the gear ratio.

Take a look at the BPS Pro Qualifier reels. They make one in a 5.2:1 and one in a 4.7:1. These are good reels and fall right in your price range. I personally use a Curado E5 for my cranking but would definitely consider the Pro Qualifier if I were on a budget.

I have one of the old Quantum 500 reels in black case. One of my favorite cranking reels. I have a bunch of 400s and several 600s. Old work horses, for the most part. I have worn the 500 out 2 times and had it rebuilt. LOTS cheaper than buying a new one. IF parts are available, I would recommend trying to have it re-built. Most of the reels in your price range are not meant for throwing deep diving CBs (for the most part). My FAVORIETE reel for throwing deep divers is the old Lews BB1 NG. Again, no longer made. Next, is actually the old green Curado 200 B5. MOST of my reels are now that. Still have 1 in the box, but not wanting to put it on a rod yet.

Some possible options?? I do not know if these are still available or not, but here goes.

The above mentioned BPS Pro Qualifier in either 4.7 or 5.2:1 ratio. BPS also has an Extreme at 5.4:1 and I think the old Bionic Plus has a 5.2:1 ratio available. I think you can still also find some of last years KVD Quantum reels. One of those was a 5.1:1 ratio.

Shimano has a couple, but I think they are round reels, the Cardiff (one is a 5.2:1), Corvolus (5.2:1) and the old Cruxis reels had a 5.2:1 ratio. Abu Garcias old stand by the C3 5500 reel, in 5.3:1. Pflueger has the Trion in a 5.2:1 ratio. Daiwa Millionaire S reel (round) is a 5.1:1 ratio, too.

These are the ones I can think of pretty quickly, but I am sure there are many others.

Hopefully, this helsp.

Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.
