I have an intermitten problem with my Merc. The engine dies just like you turn the key off and then it will start right back up (after the waves come over the back of the boat).My mechanic says he can't help because it only happens ever once in awhile.

Have replaced the switch and disabled the kill switch and it still does it.

Anyone out there have any problem like this????

check all of your ground connections, make sure tight, check all the wires with your hands and a flashlight, make sure none are shorting out.

EFI ?

If it is an EFI then you may have an ECU going bad or the electric fuel pump may be going bad.

Or the main plug to the ecu is missing the little plastic locking ring

My next step is to cut the yellow/red wire to the neutral switch. My mechanic said that might short out. Thanks for all the comments. What is the ECU and where is it (Im not a certified mechanic, just a shade tree one)???? I've had power packs go out and found that if one goes out the other bank still runs, just on three cylinders. Don't believe it to be power pack. Don't believe it to be fuel either (when it quits, it is just like turning the key off. Guess it could be pump shorting, however, it runs great unitl it stops completely. Wires look brand new and found no shorts----yet...... thanks

Is this happing after you run for a little while , or real soon after you first get out? I had a issue with mine,(97 model) and it was a voltage regulator.

It will run for a while (1 to 2 miles) slow or fast makes no difference, then dies like you turn the key off. Put in neutral and it will start right back. Maybe run the rest of the day ok or it might do it again once or twice......Had some trips to the lake (very few) where it didn't happen at all.....

sometimes will die within a mile, sometimes two or more. Dies mostly early in day and then not again for the rest of the day.

Dirty fuel? Or dirty fuel line? My buddies did that too when he bought it. He got a good deal on a boat because it ran like that. For his it was fuel starvation.

Exact same simptoms as my buddies boat. It was almost like depending slightly on throttle management the engine would starve itself after varying periods of time. Then after engine died and was restarted immediately it would do the same. New fuel lines and filter made a huge difference for him.

That is exactly what mine did. If yours is like mine and have never been replaced, (voltage regulators) they are clear and i could see that one of mine was black and one was clear. What happens is it will put out to much voltage and it will shut down ECU. Its a protection so it won,t fry ECU. If you have voltage gauge ,check it,i bet its high. Mine did this on and of for a year and i had it checked twice and they did not find it. I replaced the black v.r and it fixed the problem.
