I'm looking at possibly buying a new boat that has an Evinrude ETEC engine. I've owned Merc. and Yamaha and I know they are the biggest selling engines but have been intrigued with the Evinrude. Anyone that has some hands-on experience with this engine, I'd love to get your feedback - good or bad. I know they've reneged on their FLW sponsorship money this year, but as far as the engine itself goes, what's your opinion.

I have an 09' on a Z520. It is by far the quietest 2 stroke engine out there. I'm impressed with everything except my holeshot with two people, livewell full, and a tourny load. They are suppose to be coming out with a software fix for that. Does not seem to use any more or less oil than the others. WOT tops at about 5850. I got it up to 72.4 at 100 degrees this summer. Expect 74 to 75 this winter. XD100 at $45/gallon is not cheap. The only other engine I would have on the back would be a Pro XS.

I have talked to quite a few FLW pros and just general fisherman that have had the evinrude. They all have had a common problem with the injectors going bad very quickly. I would check that out before I made a purchase. I would definitely second the Pro Xs mention. I have a 250 Pro Xs on a nitro and it screams.

I run an older 200 Opti and like it but my buddy has a 21ft '07 Legend with a 225hp ETEC on it and it hauls a$$. He hasn't had any trouble that I know of. It's super quiet too.

Jeff this is a great motor. I had problem with hole shot until I found the right prop. I put 25" Fury on it and it came to life. About a 3-4 second holeshot with tourney load on 20'4" BCB Cougar FTD. It would run 78.9 mph. No problems ever. We have not seen any problems with the 250HO E-TEC.

I'm no mechanic, but I understand there were lower unit problems with E-Tecs when they cameout that have been corrected but some units may still have the older lower units. I'm not sure if that's valid for the 250s as they came on market after the 225s I believe.

Maybe Tommy or someone who knows more can chime in a validate or invalidate what I'm saying.

They sure are quiet and smooth running motors.

I bought a new BassCat, 19', three months ago and bought it with a 200 E-Tec. I've had nothing but good performance from it. Previously, I had a 200 Optimax with a 3 yr warranty. During that time I twisted the drive shaft into and with 30 days left in warranty a fuel injector failed and destroyed the powerhead. I've owned several Mercurys and have never had a problem, but this last one must have been a lemon.

Agreed. I have a 225 Pro XS and it has been a great motor, with no problems. But, as strokinrun stated, service them properly and all the current motors are going to perform and last thumb
