So, I need some "expert advice." I have a fly rod. I decided to start fly fishing. It is a 5 pound fly rod. Now my buddy says I need to use a 10# line on the rod. Is that ok? Or do I have to use a 5# line?
Can I use the 5# rod for fish bigger than 5#? I have never caught a fish over 1# but I expect now that I'm fly fishing I will very soon start catching bigger fish, because I heard fly fishing was the most effective way to use a river.
When I gets the cravin to chase fat girls, I call on Bass Bug

your buddy is an f'n idgit - you need to buy another 5 # rod to throw a 10# line. jeeesh
Just tape 'em together, side by side. Other guys 'll be jealous, cause of all the $$ you'd spent.
But gals's love your manliness, and your mom'll like the additional grandchildren.
Doublerodding is a blast. Just do it.

You need to attend the nearest saftey meeting first and everything else will work itself out.
It's more than the catfish would do.

Based on current exchange rates I would say that you probably need to use a 17.32# line on the $5 rod. Or you could just do the whole thing in pesos, in which case you'll end up with a lot more line. Or more fish, I can't remember. Just don't drink from the river and you should be fine.

Wait, I think we're getting off-track here. Doesn't the answer really depend on how many and what kind of flies are circling the trouthole?

I think the key is the color of the woolly booger you're going to throw with that rig.

Well, here I am!! Expert, says so right on one of my coffee cups. I am almost magical, I can fish all day and bring my flies and bugs back home in pristine, unmolested, brand new condition for the next outing. I have flies years old that have never been sullied by the slimy lips of a fish. It is a true art and takes a lot of practice to be able to cast all day without having some sneaky aquatic creature try to attack or take it away from you. Truly a lost ability for many. And leaders! By the end of the day, I have my leader all packed up in a nice compact ball, just cut it off and be able to start with a new leader next time. See, no dragging around that long, floppy leader everywhere. And it is not in the way when I go to give a new coat of Crisco to my fly line. Reminds me, gonna have to start looking for an extra fly line. Getting kind of tired of having to respool the line every time it needs to double-duty as a dog leash. Dog getting sort of tired of being smelly and slick all the time anyway. Anyway, about the problem you are having with your rod....let me rephrase that...I have been looking at some extra length fiberglass CB antennas, also looking for a supplier for heavy duty lightweight broomsticks, I'll let ya know what I find out. In the meantime, I'm headed to the pond to drown worms.

the CB antennae are also handy for fighting off cottonmouths that don't ask for permission to come aboard.
