Friends and I recently started kayak fishing Calaveras Lake in southeast SA and have noticed some skin irritation particularly in the groin, upper thighs and buttocks. These area areas that are constantly wet from paddle-drip and water coming up through the scupper holes in the kayak. I've made contact with teh SA River Autority and made a case report. Would like to know if anyone else has experienced the same.

I can't say I can relate. I fish the lake alot with a canoe. I'm dry when I'm in it, as opposed to the kayaks you describe. I do wade waist deep water for an hour or two throwing the cast net. I have had no issues. It wouldn't surprise me though to have some sort of micro organism in that water which would cause irritation. That lake has extremely nutrient filled water. Supports a large food biological chain from bottom...micro orgs to top, predatory fish.

The "No Swimming" sign at the entrance to Calaveras should tell you something.

Are there gators in Calaveras? I fished it today. Didn't get to wet though. Are you sure you just are not irritated from being wet for long periods?

Negative to both questions. No gators in Calaveras. The lake opens up at 0600 and we're in the water by 0620 and usually out by 1100 because the heat that we'd been having. We had not experienced the irritation any where else (lake or river). Makes me wonder too. lv

All kinds of micro organisms in warm/hot stagnant water. Remember the kids & adults that have died from swimming in Espada Park? Heck they just had something in the news about a month ago about some kind of bacteria in Calaveras & Braunig. I think if I was you I'd be making a trip to see the Doc.............................. As far a gators in Calaveras, I know there’s at least one. A couple of summers ago a buddy and I saw one about 7 feet long in 181 cove. He was within 30 feet of us at one point. I don’t fish there a lot and haven’t seen any more, but there are a few gators.
