Anyone remember the old Ultra-Mag reels from ABU Garcia? Or am I the oldest member of this forum? 25+ years ago these were some of the original "magnetic brake" baitcasting reels. Light, bullet proof and you could buy one at Oshmans on sale for $29.95. I own Revos and Quantum Tours but I still have an Ultra-Mag Plus on a worm rod and love it. popcorn

This post will age those who respond.I had the ultra mag 1 and 2. I still have one on a rod today. Very good reels. To me they still represent how good Garcia reels are made. Most reels are good for a while, but the ones that last are usually Garcia and Shimano.

I still have my 23 year old ABU Garcia amBASSadeur LITE graphite reel, made in Sweden. Now my wife of 19 years, bought it for me on my 22nd birthday, I still even have the orig. box and papers.

I am not sure about the reel but, I know the ABU Garcia Conolon BASS LITE rod came from Oshmans at Town East Mall. thumb

My grandfather still has a few Ultra Mag II's floating around. Tough reels for sure.

I still have three of them in use, still work good, take them to southwest parts every couple of years for service.

I had three of them that I virtually wore out. Sent them in for repairs and was told they wouldn't repair them because of the age, but allowed me $69 trade in on each one of them for new reels.

I've still got a couple, but I don't fish with them. Revo's are my workhorse reels now.

I've got a couple of Abu-Garcia XLT-521's that came with a LIFETIME WARRANTY.

They are still in excellent shape but don't have infinite anti-reverse at the handle.

I retired them to the box they came in after using them without failure for over 20 yrs.

I have ultra mag I & 2 and 521 they still work well after 20 years.
They still cast well with minimal care. I oil and grease them every several years.
I have big hands and I dont care for small reels.

One you build and fish with your own hand built custom rod you will fish with nothing else!

I wish they would come back out with the extra spools, and the quick change side plate

Great cranking reels. I believe most if not all of them were "high speed" 5.3:1

I still have a 521 that I just gave to my son in law. I have A Ambassaduer Royal that I have had for 25 years. I still use it for topwaters.
