Anybody know if maggots can be purchased in the DFW area for bluegill fishing?

I don't know about live maggots, but you can get the power bait maggots at Academy. I have used them and seem to work well.

I haven't seen any actual maggots for sale. Marco's Fisherman's Supply on I-30 at Bobtown exit in Garland has wax worms - .10 ea. They used to have giant mealworms but don't carry them any more. Petco or Petsmart stores have mealworms, but even the large size is pretty tiny. They would probably fit on a #14 hook though. I know this isn't what you were looking for but maybe it'll help someone. I'm pretty sure I've seen maggots for sale at the on-line cricket places but you'd have air freight costs to deal with and if anything like crickets, you really have to order a bunch to make it worth fooling with.

I've had my coffee grounds outside waiting on those Soldier Flies to come do their thing but haven't seen any action yet. I'm going to sweeten the pot a little with some lettuce, spinich, peaches, and a few other vegetable products to see if that will get things going.

Just for grins, you might try a size 14 or 16 Hare's Ear nymph - non beadhead version in place of the bait. I think that one must be close enough in appearance to the larva they're eating now to trigger a strike response. You can stick a little piece of crappie nibble on the barb if you want to improve their effectiveness. For that matter, a white crappie nibble could be rolled into the shape of a maggot pretty darn easy and I guarantee you they will aggressively chow down on those nibbles. One that looked like a maggot might just be irresistible to them.

I use the Gulp maggots/waxies in chartreuse and they work great for sunfishies!

Pet stores sell soldier fly prepupae (black) under some euphemism like "Phoenix worms" or something. These are not as effective as the larval stage (white) although the prepupae are as tough a bait as you can find which might be good if you have a problem with bait thieves.

Personally I would not bother with maggots from other flies because they would have a much greater potential to carry pathogens.

Found a thread where someone was growing soldier fly larva. Details just about everything one would need to know I guess.

They used to sell them in local bait shops until the early 90's, they came in all different colors. They where the best bream bait ever and you could catch several fish before they fell off. We were told after they disappeared that they were from Europe and the company who supplied all the bait shops had gone out of business. Wish they were still around.

Try putting a slice of turkey lunch meat in a disposable bowl. Add food color. Refrigerate overnight to absorb color. Set outside for a couple days. Soon you will have a bowl full of pretty pink, blue or green maggots. This tip was posted in an outdoor magazine about 40 years ago. Might be worth a try.

Try the next puffed up road kill. Ought to be a bunch of maggots for the taking. If you have the stomach for it.
