Everything hardcore happens in steelhead country or tarpon country, and frequently involves lots of drinking.

My therapist says she's happy I flyfish for the meditative qualities. Little does she know it's the cause of my PTSD.

I find it very interesting that he didn't "high stick" the guy when he was fighting him.

I would totally be the fish! My twisted logic allows me to think that somehow by BEING the fish, I would be able to understand how to better fight a big fish in the future. Of course, it isn't quite the same because if the leader is attached to the swimmer's foot, it's like you've snagged a fish in the tail. But I'll pretend

actually, i really have a strong appreciation for tif's style and format. and content has really improved the past couple of issues!
this is fly has a tendancy to get a bit cheerleader-ish about gear, guides, films, books, and lodges. peruse the archives and try to find a negative critique. i dare you! but this is not an uncommon situation for a young publication to find themselves in even after a couple of years (or more). it takes great courage to say something that could hurt the revenues of a potential advertiser. that's why journalism today is a rapidly dying business, and real journalists are an endangered species already relegated almost entirely to the ranks of those of us bearing the word "freelance" in front of our job descriptions. i actually had a meaningful discussion about this with the editor of this is fly, tim miller, back in the spring. the context was "what do we (as journalists) say about mexican tourism vis a vis fly fishing?" tif has a travel revenue stream that is heavily vested in mexican fishing tourism. but if the mag doesn't work (ie. folks aren't reading AND BELIEVING it), then the travel biz dries up anyway. if folks think they're being lied to or getting BS info from a publication, website, tv show, etc. they will quit tuning in.
but in biz these days, 95% of decisions are made with almost no thought for the long-term ramifications anyway. it's all about what makes me more $$$ or costs me less $$$ right now! and this is fly wasn't the only fishing industry media outlet with a heavy stake in mexican fishing. so the whole freaking industry was doing their darnedest to get journalists to say or print anything they could along the lines of, "it's still safe to fish in mexico." and there was a LOT of really irresponsible "journalism" on the subject of the safety of traveling to mexico to fish earlier this year! and that's when tim contacted me to take my pulse on the situation, and i pointed out that it was my opinion that tif had become a bit too "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil."
but i get very cheerleader-ish myself about a new-media format fly fishing e-zine like this is fly. it speaks to a demographic that we REALLY need to be reaching!

I immediately sent the link for this TIS issue to a half dozen of my flyslinger friends, as well as a couple that don't flyfish but do love photography. The pictures and layout of the mag were very attractive - I thought the whole thing was pretty sweet. actually, i really have a strong appreciation for tif's style and format. and content has really improved the past couple of issues! ...but i get very cheerleader-ish myself about a new-media format fly fishing e-zine like this is fly. it speaks to a demographic that we REALLY need to be reaching! Well now that I know about it, I shall have to keep an eye on it. Thanks for the heads-up there Cole so put on a swim cap w/a chin strap and attach the leader to that!
Hmm... it could work.... perhaps something soft, a foam material, that the leader can be tied off to and then hold it in my teeth?

You will also need a good video camera or two and someone who can edit together a decent video. Then you call around to the fly shops in TX until you find one that will "sponsor" the event (ie. buy the beer). You get a garage band to let you use one of their grunge rock songs as the theme music, and next year y'all will be the new boy wonders of the Fly Fishing Film Tour circuit! LOL
