Are you guys just using a spinning rod and light line? Hook them in the horn? Treble hook?

the orn of a shrimp is this little "boney" spike that runs along the length of the shrimps head and protrudes forward between their eyes....its not really bone bt just a bit of thicker shell that makesa fairly secure anchor point....I have started using smaller circle hooks and hooking the shrimp through the last digit of the tail befor the tail fan begins....the bait seems to swim more freely and live longer...plus the specs and smacks cant short strike ya.

I usually use spinning gear, 12 lb or 10 lb mono, small treble in the horn. Only problem with this is if you're really chunking the bait the horn tears often. Next time I go salty I'll try the tail method- just figured that would impare the natural movement.

Dang, wish I knew how to properly hook them when I was down there last month. I just wormed them on like dead shrimp, still caught a few trout and reds but I was thinking that it was kinda defeating the purpose of live.
I figured if I hooked them like y'all are saying then the fish would just bite off the part of the shrimp that is hanging and miss the hook...

For specks, horn is the way to go. The majority of your trout will hit the shrimp head first....kind of like a kill shot. So you would want the hook up front. But like mentioned, the tail may allow you to cast further if you needed to, so may be worth a try. Might want to give the fish another second to take the bait though.

Another trick I learned to improve the strike is to break off the horn when you put it on the hook. Just the tip around the eyes. Some say that it allows the shrimp to be more easily inhaled. Seems to work well for me and doesn't harm the shrimp. Give it a try!

i'm going to the surf this weekend, thinking about free lining some shimp and some piggy's - alittle more hearty than then craokers. may even try to free line some mullet.
anyways, a nice circle hook behind the tail of the shimp may be a great thing! i will try it!

Which is better in the surf to use, free line shrimp or free line croaker? Done well on both. Shrimp is more affordable but croaker is awesome. Guess it depends on the fish... Good luck!
