I saw Aaron Martens fishing a dropshot on the Redriver using a baitcaster setup instead of a spinning setup, I broke my dropshot rod and being in college I don't have the funds to replace it with another quality brand rod, I was wondering how many of ya use a non spinning reel setup

I use a medium light rod, rated for 6 to 14 lb line, and spool 8 lb line on it. To eliminate twist on my line I also tie a tiny swivel above the hook.

I use both but I like using the baitcaster most of the time. I use the spinning set up when im fishing vertically over the fish and fishing deep. It is just easier to get it down to the bottom with the spinning gear when fishing vertical in 25-30ft of water.

You can use a baitcaster as long as you go with the right action and line! Maybee he was using the baitcaster bcause of the size of fish and the cover they were fishing. I have used baitcasters for dropshotting in Choke Canyon for this same reason, however, I would usually use a spinning set up anywhere else. By using the baitcaster, you get a little extra power though the line is still lighter. Thats all I can think of!

I like using a baitcaster in water less than 15 ft.i think the spinning rod gives you sensitivity in deep water that you just dont get with a baitcaster.

I was talking to Aaron at the Champions Toast that evening after the final weigh-in and he said really the only reason he was throwing his drop-shot on a casting setup was because he was using 20# Fluoro, a significantly heavier weight and working around heavy cover. He was just pitching it in his areas, shaking it 3 or 4 times and making another presentation. I know he traditionally uses spinning gear for his drop shotting.
I personally believe that drop-shotting with a casting outfit is really kind of a specialty thing; something done when heavy line or heavy cover is involved. 90% of the drop shotting you will do will involve line between 6-10 pound FC and a weight around 1/8th oz.
...just my .02
