OK, I've been told by just about everybody I ask, that trying to catch kingfish near Port A in the winter is a waste of time. However...I was cleaning some trout at Conn Brown Harbor late last December when a guide brought his catch to the cleaning table. It included 4 nice kings in the 15-20 lb range. He told me they caught them on live mullet bottom fishing. He was understandably reluctant to share much more info but did tell me he was 'outside the jetties'. He was running a 21' bay boat so I'm sure he wasn't out too far. Could somebody please share some info with me on how I can catch kings in the winter.I'm not real interested in trolling. I have a 21'cc deep v but am pretty cautious about venturing offshore.

Don't waste your time man..

He prob. just got lucky and found a few strays on a reef. He was prob 10 miles out and 5 miles south when he caught his. Was there a storm or front a few days before or very calm waters?

If there was a front or storm I would say that the kings came in on a warm offshore current from deeper water chasing bait.

Otherwise I wouldn't look anywhere under 50+ miles for kings in the winter but I don't have all the answers either.
