Are some boats better than others when you have some stout wind? I'm talking about 2 or 2 1/2 foot stuff. I hate to sound dumb but the other day I was getting beat up pretty good in my Procraft by myself (which is worse) and an old boy that had just dumped in behind me flew past me in his Skeeter (he had a passenger).

Yes...usually the bigger the boat the better it rides...although this is not true in all cases...Different brands of boats do better in wind than others...

As the saying goes "size matters". I have owned a procraft 185 and almost drowned during a tournament, It is a good boat but the size just could not handle the wind I was in. I now have a 21 ft Skeeter and have been out with 50mph wind gusts on Fork . The ride is like night and day. I'm sure hull design has something to do with it as well but at least I was not seeing my engine cowling dipping half way in the water at the bottom of each swell like I did with the smaller boat. Just my opinion, James

That would scare me. My boat is a little over 20' but I think it is too light weight. Maybe I should fill up the livewell.

Appologies---It is probably I don't know how to drive. Dont apologize you have a question and have every right to ask it. When a topic has come up many times some people will ignore it other will comment about how many times it has been brought up and still others will offer you advice that will help you. All brands of boats along with the lenght and size differences will ride better/worse than others. Just find what your boat can handle and use the info to keep yourself out of harms way. Wear your PFD.

I have a zx200 and it does very well in 50 + winds, but I try to keep my light to get up on top faster. Like whitecapping said always wear your PFD and only try what you can handle. No shame in going to the bank if you haven't been in bad winds very much. Like the skeeter that pass you in 2&21/2 footers my would also but been doing this for over 25 years. Stay safe and learn you'll live a lot longer

I do use my PFD. I have one of those fancy ones that blow up but when it gets bad I use my home made one that consist of two of those cheap orange ones sewn and glued together. It may look funny but I will float. I have been in some bad winds on the Tennessee river when they were pulling water and the wind was blowing against it. Now that is some bad stuff and I did okay simply because I am alive. That was in another boat lesser than what I have now. I do believe I need to learn some stuff about it though.
