i have a 1985 mecury v6 175 hp,I get it under 1100 it will just die, it won't idle under 1100 rpm, just die's out, won't start in idle position either, I have to give the throttle about half way open to start the motor, Carb's have been gone thru and seen no problem there at all, any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks, jerry R. happy fishing,

Have you rebuilt the diaphragm fuel pump lately? #1 culprit of Mercs that are cranky to get started and no idle. At the same time you rebuild the pump, there should be an inline filter between the pump and the carbs that should also be replaced. Just follow the line off the pump and you will see it if it is there on yours. Also I would suggest pulling all the plugs and hit them with DeepCreep, let it sit overnight and start the next morning. A lot of times, there can be enough carbon build up to effect starting and low speed performance. The I would run several tankfuls of SeaFoam mixed at the proper rate.
Rebuilding the pump is easy however do not use the Clymer manual as a reference. On this the pics show the diaphragms in the wrong sequence. Use the instructions enclosed with the kit.
My 150's would run just fine at WOT. But trying to get them started on a warm start required a fast idle of around 1000rpm or more and then when the controls were brought back to neutral they would stall out unless you jacked it back into gear before you lost the rpms. Not good for the lower unit.

Seen several early Mercs, that the idle advance moduel goes out causing this idle problem. Disconnect the red and the white wires at the ignition box then adjust the idle advance till tach shows 1000 rpm on the hose. Try this and we will go from their.

Besides the idle stabilizer, raise the floats inthe carbs until they almost flood. Makes life a lot easier for those early mercs.........
