This is the message that you get if your a memeber of ACT. I thought since Conroe has been such a heated debate on here. I would post this and let everyone know if you wanted to do something to help .....heres your chance.

Texas ACT Members:

The Seven Coves BASS Club of Willis, TX (a Texas BASS Federation Nation club) is preparing for their second round of transplanting water celery into Lake Conroe. The lake is located 50 miles north of Houston, TX and has been stocked with 110,000 white amur to control invasive growth of hydrilla. The Seven Coves restoration project is designed to help insure that a healthy native stock of plants will remain within the lake to promote the local bass fishery.

Work date: Sunday, June 1, 2008
Time: 9:00 am - 11:00 am
Additional information: Boats will be available to transport volunteers between the launch site and work area.
Donuts, drinks and vinyl chest waders will be provided.

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Ron Gunter at,
home: 936- or
cell: 936- or
e-mail: regunter@consolidated.net

I took Rons phone numbers down(in case he didnt care for that info to be out)....reaching him by email will be the best bet.

Ron is a very busy dedicated man. He just took on more responsibility this last week when the SE Fed needed him. I am sure that if you email him he will get in contact with you....if not work through me and I will help set things up so you can help to restore Lake Conroe.

The plants will arrive at Stow-A-Way around 8:30am. All volunteers are asked to meet at Stow-A-Way by 9:00 am on Sunday. The plants will be loaded onto transport boats and then shipped to a soon to be determined area on the lake.

All volunteers will be taken to the transplant areas by the transport boats...unless you prefer to take your own boat. In that case, you may launch out of Stow-A-Way marina free of charge on that day. You will need to let the folks at Stow-A-Way know that you are launching for the purpose of volunteering when you get there. All boating regulations (insurance, life jackets, fire extinguishers, etc) will be your responsibility if you use your own boats.

There will be a brief meeting at 9:00am to give all volunteers a brief review on proper planting methods before we get underway. Each transplantation will include setting 4-5 plants into the lake, covering them with a protective wire mesh cage, anchoring that cage down with bent rebar, and marking the plants with a 5 foot section of labeled 1" pvc tubing.

The project will supply the following: Breakfast donuts, water, sodas, and chest waders.

It is suggested that volunteers bring the following: Old tennis shoes, a life jacket, dry towels, and possibly a change of clothes. The plants will be set in 2-3 feet of water, and the lake water temperature is currently a pleasant 85 degrees...much better than the chilly water that we had for the first go-round.

This project is being funded with a federal grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. One of the requirements of the grant is that every volunteer sign a liability waiver. These waivers will be on location at the marina for you to sign before we begin work. Please make sure that you return a signed waiver on Sunday morning.

We're hoping that the session will not take more than two to three hours of actual planting time. If you need to leave early, please let the club officials know of your departure. All volunteer "man-hours" are being recorded for matching funds relating to the grant.

Thank you all for showing interest in this project. This endeavor will be a true example of a community at work. The Seven Coves Bass Club is on record as supporting the control/removal of the invasive hydrilla in the lake...but we are also doing what we can to keep enough native vegetation in the lake to allow it to remain a healthy ecosystem for all to enjoy. Your help this weekend will be a tremendous start in that direction. We are all looking forward to this with great enthusiasm.

FYI...pictures will be taken during Sunday's event. These photos will be sent to B.A.S.S. to be included in a conservation "scrapbook" page on their website. B.A.S.S. will also be sending "Angler Conservation Team" t-shirts to EVERYONE who volunteers. More info will be given on Sunday morning.

Lastly, in order to get a preliminary head count for supplies...please RSVP to this message to let me know if you/your organization will (or will not) be attending this Sunday.

Thank you...and God Bless.

Vice President
Seven Coves Bass Club

I was for sure gonna help out but I just got a promotion and had to come back to work a week early so I won't be able to come. I'll be checking my email for the next ACT info so i can join in on the next one. Does anyone know if celery is the only vegetation that will be planted in the future? I've been talking with Dr. Masser at A&M about this and we seemed to think that coontail would be a good idea as well. It doesn't take over like hydrilla, the carp won't touch the stuff, is fairly hardy, and will take off fairly easily. It would compliment the celery with another species. Might be better than putting all of your eggs in one basket.

I was going to suggest coontail, but I've seen it take over my home lake (Lake Bruin in NE LA) just like hydrilla on lake conroe. Don't get me wrong, as a fisherman I'd rather have some kind of grass in the lake, but coontail may have some of the same problems as hydrilla.

But if you wanted "native" vegetation and not invasive hydrilla, I'd say coontail and american lotus (lily pads) are the best bets. Both probably have some of the same problems as hydrilla though.

I commend you guys efforts to establish vegetation.

If it's legal, a big group sinking marked brushpiles may also be a good idea.

I am not a veg expert but in the Lake Betty area it looks to me like a good portion of coontail is growing there...I might be wrong.

No worrys Blake...we look forward to you help in the next 5 weeks or so.

it for sure grows up around wildwood in the north. maybe we can transplant it from those 2 areas and spread it around a little next planting date. i don't think we would need any kind of permit for taking it from one part of the lake to another. plus it would be free.
