I know this topic has been brought up before but i'm trying to make myself fish the jig more and have more confidence in the bait. As a rookie jig fisherman i did what most do and that's go down to Wal-Mart or Acadmey and just grap a couple of jigs off the shelf for most part Strike King brand and no certain style of jig such as football or swiming jig. I seen on here that spitfire jigs were the way to go but there are a lot of different brands and i know a lot of sucess is due to presentation. So this rookie jig pitcher wants to know what guide line do you that have mastered the jig use when buying jigs. Such as brands styles such as football, grass or other type jigs and also is one brand better than others. I want to keep fishing with the jig cause i know it catches fish and will help upgradee you weight but at times when you haul nothing but water it makes you want to set it down and throw something else so if there is a jig out there that out preform another then lets here it.

i like to throw a football head jig. my strategy is to look for fallen trees or brush in the water and throw right off in the middle of it. a very slow retrieve usually gets some attention, at least thats the pattern ive had so far. it just takes patience and lots of practice to become confident with a certain bait. i just ordered some black angel jigs and im sure if youre on here much you know they are awesome.

I threw out all my jigs last year and started over again.
Keep it simple!
Buy a couple of the standard colors (black/blue, watermelon, brown craw) But a couple sizes of each, don't over complicate it.
I went with StrikeWorks jigs and haven't ever looked back. Great quality, and a local guy here on the TFF.
Throw them everywhere you would throw a worm or pitch a beaver. You will get bit. Just gotta keep it up until you get bitten by the bug, and then you will always have one tied on.

There are several good companies for jigs. Spitfire, Strikeworks, Ezee Jigs are all good. I prefer to order from Spitfire because he has everything I need in one place. As far as type. Football is more where you would fish a Carolina Rig. Grass jig for grass. Wood jig for timber. With the spitfire jigs, I mainly use the hybrid, football, and finesse. The finesse jig is a good jig to start with to start to learn the bite. Keep colors simple. Black/blue, a brown varation such as black/brown/amber and PBJ (great color), watermellon, and a pumpkin varation. My confidence has greatly increased with the jig this year. A good rod helps with the learning curve as well.

Take a look at the Black Angel jigs, I was recently given a couple by a buddy and wow, these jigs are great. There craftsmanship is incredible and they don't chip like a lot of others. Look at there web site, I think you will see the difference.
( and no I am not sponsored by them, but I will tell people about a great product when I find one and truly believe in. )

Don't forget swim jigs. I like shad, talipia, and bluegill colors.

Also, there's a guy from Mississippi that makes jigs -- theey're awesome and well built. THey're about 3 dollars a piece. He started up his little business to try and keep his boat. I don't have his e-mail with me but if you're interested let me know and I'll post tommorrow.
If you have any special colors he'll custom make them.

PM sent, It's easier to explain everything in person. I'll also send you some links to articles. Different jigs have different applications. You don't throw football jigs in bushes, that is not their purpose. You don't throw wood jigs in Hydrilla, etc......etc.....

I have some pricey jigs that have never been used with no paint on the heads and broken bands. I am interested in a durable local brand as well. I've seen plenty of advertising here but not sure if any of you guys sell them.

I like to keep my jig options simple so I pretty much stick to the Lake Fork Tackle Tungsten jig. Good hook, nice skirt, good rattle arrangement. The two sizes of 1/2 oz and 3/8 oz serve my needs. The head design and line tie arrangement come through wood, rock and weeds well for me. The tungsten makes it a little easier to feel the different bottom structure types.
I'll bet Joey sent you some good information and from all accounts his Spitfire jigs are a good, well made lead option jig.

That question will get you a million answers. I fish jigs quite a bit, especially since I own BTR Custom Lures and jigs are my specialty. I have never seen a Black Angel, Spit N Fire, or Ezee jig, but I am sure I could take those jigs and catch as many fish with them as with BTR Custom jigs. However, I have way more confidence in mine, and I have unlimited options to choose from. I make football, shaky, flipping, casting, swimming, and punching jigs, and they all work great. Find a jig in which you believe you can catch fish with, and stick with it until you do. Look for a good hook; I use Owner and I am sure the other companies mentioned use Mustad or Gamakatsu. Good luck, and I hope you stick some hawg jig fish.
