I've managed to locate the location of my ills..... What's the ??thing?? called where the spark plug wires come from?? It has part of the wiring harnes connected to it and the plug wires come out of it and connect to the plugs.

Any idea of the better/best place to buy it to replace???

Usually, plug wires originate from ignition coils.

Authorized service facilities usually carry spare parts.

www.marineengine.com and www.iboats.com are ok too.

I traced the wiring to the switch box and it seems that might be my problem. I teasted it and found power coming into the box but nothing coming out. Could this be my problem or is there something else I should check too??

What are you using to measure power into and out of the switchbox? It takes a DVA to measure it correctly. But if you have power from the stator to the switchbox and no power from the switchbox, the problem could still be the trigger. Not likely, but it could be.

It's a '78 Mercury 850, 85hp. I tested it with a meter (not properly I'm sure) but it was getting power to it and nothing from it. Everything coming into it has juice but nothing going to the distributer (???). It's not getting spark to any of the plugs. I traced the plug wires to the dist., found not power. From there I followed it's wires to the switch box where I found power coming to it but not leaving.

Sounds like you need to let someone look at it that knows what they are doing. Outboards dont have distributors unless they are real old OMC's. I've got a 61 model 85hp that uses a distributor.

I appreciate the response but everyone had to start somewhere. I want to learn about my motor. I used the word distributor for not knowing what the specific thing is actually called.

I bought a manual for mine. It is a great investment if you want to learn to do it yourself. Mine only covers 90, 115, and 140hp. Go to kencook.com and enter the engine serial number and it will give you a manual and price.

ya you really need a manual.

First, make sure your battery is fully charged - you need at least 250-300 RPMs while cranking to generate spark.

Your kill wire is either orange or black/yellow. Disconnect it at the powerpack and retest - if you have spark now, it means the kill circuit is accidently grounded - check the keyswitch and emergency lanyard (if you have one) first.

If your kill wire is black/yellow, the next step is to disconnect the rectifier and retest. if you get spark, replace the rectifier.

J-

Thank you!!! Seriously, thanks. I am getting a manual. I've seen several names of who has created the books (like for vehicles.) Is there one name that is better than the others??? One that I should avoid???

Battery is completely new. Where would I find the kill switch?
