Is it legal to put a slot fish in your livewell? Last weekend both me and my wife caught fsh of a life time on Fork. We did not have a scale so took measurements of the fish to calculate weight. I wanted so badly to stick them in the livewell to take them to a marina to have weighed. But, I did not know the law. Mine was 23 1/2 inches long and my wifes was 22". So, both were under the 24" slot limit.
So, is it legal to put them in the livewell to run to a marina to get weighed if they will be released afterwards? I will be buying a good scale to keep in the boat now, but still wanted to know about this. Thanks.

No, it is illegal to retain the fish for any reason I believe.

Hell no. Retain means keep out pf the lake for longer than unhooking and releasing.

The only exception I am aware of is at Purtis,if you catch a big fish you can have a Ranger weigh it. Used to be a minimum length required to do this.

Does anyone know if theres a provision in the law that alows tournaments to retain fish in recovery tank or is it just that they turn there heads.Even though fish are released its still a retention over leagal limit.Or should I have even asked.I know it has nothing to do with the post, other then the intent of the indiviual to weigh and release the slot fish are the same.

How does a tournament go over their legal limit? As long as the # of fish doesn't exceed the legal number allowed per contestant, then there isn't an issue. Years ago, a couple of rookie game wardens tried that argument, but got their arse handed to them in court.

Only exception I know of is if you have a 13lb fish during the SAL program. I was told no warden would write a ticket for a slot fish if it could be donated.

That's why there's not tournaments on slot lakes very often. You can only keep dinks and one over. You are not allowed to keep slot fish in a tournament on a slot lake.

So how do you explain all of those "doubles" pictures taken on lake fork with 2 fish in their hands.
