The easiest way to explain it is that it's a rubber insulator between the hub & the prop. Sometimes it's normal wear from the torque of the motor & sometimes it can be caused by hitting an obstruction.

yep. it sounds like the hub has let go.

those lil' props can't take too many impacts before the hub spins. it did it's job. saves the prop shaft from extreme damage.

Hell-man you can do it yourself--go to a marine shop and purchase the part--watch how it comes apart and duplicate it--part cost around 20.00. Its not a major operation--matter of fact the simplicity of it is almost startling.

NOT on that hub, unless you purchase the hub funnel, and drivers needed to "down size" the hub before it goes into the hub cylinder. I will be happy to order the parts needed if you wanna do it yourself. the funnel is 180.00 and the drivers are 250.00. not to mention you'll need a GOOD press. I use a 20ton air/hydraulic press.

question: are you saying that it works fine now?

Thing about prop hubs is, once spun, always spun. They don't spin one minute and not the next.

Another possible cause of your symptom (engine revs high but the boat don't go): something caught on the lower unit, like a bit of moss or a stick or something, obstructs the flow of water over the blades. Could be a little stick caught in the diffuser ring causing exhaust gas to bleed back into the blades.

The bent gas line was unrelated, but when you stopped to clear it, whatever was on the lower unit fell off.

rubber hubs can act funny when the first start to spin.

once the rubber "cools" off it'll try to stick to the hub cylinder, until it warms up again and spins even more. Then all of a sudden it's completely done and your stranded.

jtexas is correct. "once spun always spun"

The propeller turns, it pulls water from in front and pushes it behind. If something (a small branch or a little bit of moss caught on the lower unit) blocks the water in front, the prop will exert enough pressure to actually boil the water - sort of like it's pulling the air out of the water - it's called cavitation. Feels kinda like a slipping clutch, or a spun hub.

Or, your prop might have a ring welded around the outside of the hub on the trailing edge (diffuser ring), it's purpose is to diffuse the exhaust gas from the motor, which otherwise would get pulled into the blades causing ventilation - same effect as above. A little twig, or a couple tiny pieces of gravel caught in the ring is all it takes to let the exhaust ventilate the prop. Prop hubs without diffuser rings are flared on the end.

Whichever you had, it fell off when you stopped - no problem. If it's making full RPMs now, your hub is fine.

To test for a spun hub, score or paint a line across the inner hub and rubber insert, go out and run the heck out of it, then look to see if the marks still line up.
