...atop the depthfinder heap. Those new side imaging units by Hummingbird are just...wow. It's not just the technology, but the screen image quality. I was told Lowrance is scrambling trying to get a side-imaging unit out. Thoughts?

They are not scrambling from what I have heard. When it comes out, it will blow the Bird out of the water, as usual. It will be considerably more expensive though. Don't get me wrong though, I LOVE my 997cSI.
It doesn't matter how you find the pot of gold, all that matters is that you beat the leprachaun.

Well just have to see about that "blow out of the water stuff"....They better do something fast because they are losing customers fast...Does anyone have any hard evidence about these new units? I am tired of all these rumors...

Not with me. I am a Lowrance fan. BESIDES the side imaging of course I just feel like the overall quality of the Lowrance detail is better than Humminbird. I actually bought and installed 2 Humminbirds recently, the 797Csi and the 787C units with GPS and took the back and got a Lowrance 520c and 28cHD. The side imaging makes a great addition to hat I have but I just did not like using the Birds as my primary navigation and sonar units. Just my opinion. I have no ties to either and when I am spending my money I want what I feel more comfortable using.

Don't get me wrong though, I LOVE my 997cSI. what he said....I like his 997 too, the finances are finally here and I am deciding to get it...I think my basscats console will look a little cluttered with a lcx-25c, a 997 and a indash flasher..it can only make me more successful

I thought Hummingbird had a patent on side imaging.

If your a "bank beater", then dont get one. I you fish deeper water there isnt any comparison. You can not tell what is actualy below you with traditional sonar. You may think you know, but you dont. I run my 997 split screen between SI an 2d. Samll rises like a foundation are almost undetectable on the 2d side, but With the SI it is easily found. The biggest benefit I see from mine is the ability to make up to a 720 foot wide pass and see evrything that is there. If I see something, I cursor over to it and make a waypoint. Then I can go back over it closer for a better look. How long would it take you to cover a 720 foot wide path using 2d sonar? Forever and you would miss half the structure out there. With the SI you can idle along looking a football field distance to each side. Pretty amazing. When you guys loose tournaments start looking at the boats that win and see what they are using. Below is a is an isolated rock pile off of a rip-rap shore line. I have passed it a humdred times over the past 5 years and never knew it was there. First time out with the SI, I spotted it. Its been a good guaranteed fish spot.

They are pretty impressive.
The contrast in sunlight is outstanding.
Yes, Lowrance has been knocked off the mountian.
I'am waiting for improvements in SIde Finders and a massive price reduction before I have to buy one
I thought technology patent was for 7 years.

I've used both Lowrance and Humminbird. 113cHD, 26cHD, 797c2SI If I could get an even swap for that 113cHD to a 997, I would not blink. I too am/was a die hard Lowrance fan, but seeing is believing and I have been converted. Lowrance still has the edge in 2d, but the future is in 3d. Here's my setup: Console: 113cHD Lowrance and 797c2SI Humminbird Front: 26cHD Lowrance
Tracker Tim, You are the man! So right too. I found a pond in 20+ft right on a point on CC that I never knew was there. It is amazing the things we just cannot see with 2d.
Glad to have taken..."the trash in the back!"

been googling a little bit, I believe the patent is on the transducer. You are correct. This is a huge issue, and it is why Lowrance can't even touch this tech.

I am considering adding a SI unit to go along wiht the LCX-38CHD that I recently acquired but would like to see one in person that somebody could explain to me what I am seeing, so if anybody out there has one and don't mind showing/teaching me a litle, I would be grateful and buy you dinner or something.
