I was hoping Some of You Who have used this would share some info on what has worked the best for You? What size weight do You Guys normally use? How far up from the hook do You put it? What baits have been productive etc? What depth and type of cover do you prefer to fish it in? Thanks in advance.

I use a 1/8 oz split shot or smaller on light line (8-10# test). Anywhere from 6 - 18" up from the hook, depending on cover and how I want the bait to fall. I generelly fish a split shot when I'm looking for a finesse carolina-rig like presentation in shallow water (0-6 ft). Baits that have worked well for me are zoom finesse worms, 4" worms, baby brush hogs and small flukes.

I use this style of weight with a rubber "Peg It".

The split shot can nick your line if your not careful. I peg the weight about 16" to 18" above the hook (1/0 EWG). Any small soft plastic will work. I have caught fish on this rig with finesse worms, tiny flukes, baby brush hogs, salt craws, 4" Senko's, tiny craw bugs, etc.....

I have been fishing the split shot rig for a long time. That's So Cal fishing! smile I use either a number 5 or 7 size round split shot. 8-10 pound test. Used to be mono, but now it's flourocarbon, on a 6' - 6'6" medium or medium light spinning rig. 12-18 inches above either a size 2 or 1/0 keeper hook. I fish mostly 4 inch straight tail worms and reapers. You can't find those here in Texas. I re-up on those when I go to San Diego on vacation. Lately, I've taken to throwing LFT ring frys and Grande Baby Rattle Snakes on the split shot and those work great too! You can bump the split shot across the bottom, or slow swim it. Mostly shallow water, less than 10 feet, but it will work with swim style baits (reapers or flukes) on steep rocky drop offs as well.
