I am just wondering why in the world are there are rebates, rebates, and rebates! Why can't they just take the money off the retail price and save a stamp. Part of me wonders if there is an underlying problem with the reels and that is why there is a rebate? Don't get me wrong I love Shimano and Abu, its just why all the hassle?!

They are factory rebates that allows the retailer to keep his margin. it's all about marketting and keeping a presence in the market place. Compared to the money spent for advertising, rebates are far cheeper. it's a hassle for the consumer but, a winner for the stores and manufactureres.

At least my boat and truck are paid for, woo hoo!

Best Buy loves rebates !!!

In my profession rebates are illegal because they are classified as an enticement. So says the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission.

Rebates are great for the company. They offer a rebate you purchase the product and then forget to send in for the rebate. They win.

That's why you can't buy cheap Mexican Tequila.

Especially since it takes between 5-7 years for the agave plant to mature, corn just one growing season!

Of course there was also the famed agave plant disease a few years ago that threatened tequila supply and 'suprisingly' drove tequila prices thru the roof, even the cheap stuff! rolfmao

Tequila.....no thanks, even with a rebate! barf

The reel mfrs make out like bandits on 'rebates', for all the reasons previously mentioned.

They get to use your money for 6-8 weeks, then send you a little back....IF.... you remember to fill out and send the rebate paperwork in.

When rebates consist of 'FREE' merchandise, like a Revo t-shirt, they cover most of their cost vis the infamous 'SHIPPING & HANDLING' fees! rolfmao

The reel mfrs don't make a dime off of the reel you purchased from a dealer; the mfr has already been paid wholesale for that reel. The dealer gets his full mark up and the mfr sends you part of the money the dealer paid for the reel.

There are two reasons mfrs offer rebates: 1) to move inventory and 2) to meet the competition. The first mfr hopes the dealer will re-stock since the goods they had on hand are now sold and the other mfr will also offer rebates to maintain market share.
