I spooled up two reels with 10lb test before a fishing trip this week. I was throwing light lures in the wind. I noticed the line being fairly loose on the spool even though my brakes were set high. I casted out as far as I could downwind and I noticed my line was broke on the spool. I took off the excess line and retied. I was then fishing with my other setup and it did the same thing. There is no way this section of line had gotten scraped by shell on either reel. The reels had two different brands of line on them. I think it may have something to do with the problem of having the line not packed tight on the spool after casting into the wind. I am fairly new to baitcasters so I may be missing something. Any insight into the problem would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for the help.

It was broke further down into the spool than a long cast?
Are they the same model of reel?

Do your rods by any chance have hook keepers?
Do you like to smoke while you fish?

The area where the breakages occured was in the line on the spool that is not packed real tight at the end of a cast. That section of line I do not think ever made it into the guides. I do not smoke and both of my rods do have hook keepers above the reel. The reels are both different and the line came off of different spools of different brands.

dang, thought maybe you cut the line by hooking a lure to the reel. the question about smoking was a long-shot.

you got yourself a real mystery here.

One possibility: you get slack on a spool, it forms loops, pretty soon you got a knot. some knots when you pull 'em tight cut the line. But you'd had to of pulled it in some way.

Nuther possibility: slack, loops, loop gets caught on something (some feature on the reel maybe?), 10 lb test you might could break it without noticing?

Are you keeping tension on the line as you put it on the spool?

How old is that line?

I know if I keep line in the boat storage during the summer (gets real hot in there) and then also during winter, it goes bad.

I was looking for some new line the other day and that store had old line (new in the box) where all the rubber bands around the line was dried out and broken. Neddless to say I didn't buy any of that line.

Is the line nice and limp or is it showing quite of bit of memory (real curley).

Although it's new, it may be really old.

I spooled both reels up within the last month and they have been kept indoors. I think the possibility is that loops are forming. I usually chunk the lure and reel it in even though the line is not tight on the spool. A few casts and eventually I pull out about a foot and I hold tension on the line and reel it in. I think that may be the case but I do not know what I can do about that other than throw a heavier lure.

Any lure into the wind is tough, tighten down the spool tension and crank up the backlash control. Light lure into the wind spells spinning gear. You have to keep slack out of the spool.

It could be that you are getting slack on the spool and forming a loop that is pinching and eventually breaking the line. I find that a little strange that it would do that on two different reals. So my guess would be that you got a bad spool of line. It happens sometimes.

It may be in when you birdnest how you untable the line too. If you just pull on the line it's possible that you are actually breaking the line.

Basically when you birdsnest the reel there is a point where the line reverses direction creating a V and often it will hang up the line one way or another in this V. With 10# test you may just be pulling too hard to untable the line and busting the line at that V....
