94 Astro 18.6' 150 merc. Owner has had new water pump installed.Temp alarm goes off but looks like water is pumping ok.He says it has water coming out of the hole in the moter like it suppose to.What other reasons would cause the boat to get hot.Boat is clean other than being faded. He would sell it to me for 1500.00.He has been offered more but boat belonged to a mutual friend who passed away so he is not in it to make money. Is a boat like this even if I have t put a few hundered in it worth it. This will be my first boat and I have heard the horror stories of owning a boat.

I don't think you'd risk losing much if you bought it for $1500 smile If it turns out it needs major work, sell it for $1500.

Water coming out the motor only indicates that the water pump is pumping water - doesn't guarantee that the water is circulating the powerhead. Could be blockage/corrosion in the water passages. Could be running lean. Could be malfunctioning overtemp alarm. Compression test will give you an idea of the internal condition of the engine.

almost forgot...could also be fuel restriction or low oil warning, misinterpreted as overtemp

The overheat alarm on a Merc is a constant horn. The oil alarm is a beep. If it is the overheat alarm, you can try removing the thermostats. If that is the problem, I would get new t-stats and not run without them.
