I bass fish 100 percent of the time but thinking of adding some crappie setups in my boat and trying something different. What would be some good colors and sizes of jigs to start with? I live near Lake Fork and any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I loaded a cooler with some nice sized crappie on Saturday with Bobby Garland 2” original baby shad in blue ice. Black jighead with big red eyes. 1/8 oz jighead.

I caught fish in 3 to 6 feet of water around lily pads. I’ve never fished Fork. This was another East Texas lake. Biggest was just over 16”.

Here’s a photo.

Blue ice in the original baby shad is one of the most failsafe colors I’ve ever used, but I also think Bobby garlands are one of the better baits out there, they aren’t very durable, but they sure do catch fish. I will say I rarely use anything over 1/16 oz and I always use a plain, unpainted jig head. Most of the time it’s size profile more than color. Right now they like a standard 2-3” bait, when they push post spawn and then on into the summer I use a 1/16 oz and downsize to a #6 sickle hook and use a small bait, like 1” size.

Chartreuse is a good color anywhere. Blue is another good color.

Chart/black been a go to for yrs for many people. Shad color is also extremely good almost anywhere. Chart/lime is also very good. Stained/off color water; darker colors; clear water natural colors. As mentioned, size profile can make a big difference depending on time of year. The old cliche about match the hatch with a natural presentation.
