I have 2018 ram with 5.7 hemi, always used 5-20w oil, approaching 100000 miles, oil pressure at 60 is same as always 53 lbs, never burns a drop inbetween 5000 mile changes; question should i change to 5-30w during really hot weather when I am pulling 19 foot bass tracker? thanks

You've gone 100k with 5-20 why change now.

I’ll be honest I doubt in hot Texas heat it’ll make a whole lot of difference. Either would probably be fine. Check if there is a tsb on it, I know some manufacturers have come out and said you should switch on some vehicles. It just depends. Ultimately your call. If your oil doesn’t look like it’s got shrapnel in it when you drain it I wouldn’t change.

You've gone 100k with 5-20 why change now. I'm assuming that the manufacturer recommends 5-20? Why would you want to do anything but that?

Becasue the only reason they recommend 5w-20 instead of 10w-30 is the 1% gain you get in fuel economy. It has nothing to do with what gives the best protection.

Some vehicles, especially Dodge and Chrysler products will set a Check engine light for using the wrong viscosity oil!

Running 30 weight oil is not going to cause you problems in Texas. Most manuals give a range. In a 2024 Ram's case: 0w-20, 0w30 and 5w30 (page 345).

Some vehicles, especially Dodge and Chrysler products will set a Check engine light for using the wrong viscosity oil! Dodge and Chrysler throw check engine lights regular when you use the recommended oil.

20 or 30 weight is probably not going to make any difference IF your truck's cooling system is working like it should. 30 weight would just help offset peaks imo, which could be under a load or while stopped (decreased air flow). With aging coolant and systems, I do like the idea of moving up. Your take may be different. Anyway, this is why I run 40 weight in all my small air cooled engines. ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2025/04/full-35377-265860-oil.jpg)
