Asparagus crowns? The nursery near me said they won’t be selling any this season. Do I need to order online?

Yes, I order on line. Order the 3 year crowns and get the male only plants.

I can’t remember exactly…..it’s either gurneys, burpees or johnnys. I think johnnys but check the other two if they don’t have them.

How’s your doing? How many seasons have you had yours going? I’m exploring all the perennial veggies and asparagus is on the top of my list. Also got some fartichokes coming (aka Jerusalem Artichoke aka sunchoke).

I have 2 beds that have been producing for 25 years. I planted 2 new beds…one 3 years ago and one last year. They all are producing. I’m not harvesting the 3 and 1 year old bed extensively yet. The three year bed will be ready next year (could harvest fully this year, but giving it an extra year just because I have so much of it). The 1 year old bed will get harvested at 3 years. That’s all just to ensure vibrant and healthy root systems. I tried artichokes one year. Had success, but just wasn’t something I was interested in after that.

The first two beds are the old ones, the far two are the newer. You can see the asparagus ferns in those two.

How exactly does that work again . I helped my buddy out planting some and they were these goofy tree/bush things for 2 years and then This year they finally produced what actually looks like asparagus 🤣

That’s how it works. Perennial plants reproduce differently than annuals.

Assuming you properly care for it yes

Jerusalem artichokes are different than artichokes. You actually eat the tuber rather than the flower and they apparently give you gas hence the nickname “fartichokes”

There is one that started somehow on a side road I take to work. It’s gotten pretty big the last few years. It’s just getting started now.
