Are modern day Abu Garcia baitcasters good reels? I’m talking about like the $120 price point and up.

I am a Revo guy and I love the ABU Revo line. $120 and up for a new reel is probably as low as I would go. Look for a good used reel as they are well made and flawless. If you need help send me a PM. A good new/ used reel will get you a high quality reel for a good price. If you are looking for new than don 't go cheap.

I've always owned/used 13, Shimano, and Lews. Putting together a few new setups and figured Id give an Abu a go. I used to buy those $220+ reels but I just can't see that anymore. The $120-$200 range is where I stick now. Just bought a BB1 Pro for a deep crank setup today.

About 6 years ago, I bought an Abu Garcia Revo ALX. It was $250 if I recall correctly. Returned it the same day for a Curado. That reel was extremely picky on where you set the tension knob/brakes. I'd have it setup one way, was too tight to get a good cast. If I even breathed on that tension knob to loosen it, it was backlash city USA. I don't know if that's still a problem with the Revo reels, but I'm willing to try one again. I really like the SX, saw one at BP today. Might go with one of those for my topwater setup.

All I use for bait fishing. I needed another 1 with a bait clicker. Cablelas had 1 listed with a clicker. I received it and no clicker. I was going to return it but dude at Cabelas gave me a refund and said to keep it. Free is good.

ABU GARCIA makes in my opinion, good bait cast reels. It depends on what your fishing for. Just keep them clean and lubed. I have and use: 3 - 6500c3 , 3 - 5500c3, 1 - 6501c3 L/H , 1 4500 , 1 4000c. they all serve a purpose..

If I had a dollar for every striper , sandbass or hybrid that I have caught with an abu , I would have a BIG pile of dollars. smile

add in dollar for each spec trout and redfish , there would be a lot more.

I have never worn one out or had one break. Most of the ones I have are at least 30 years old, not counting the little black max's I use now for
crappie fishing.

I have 5 or 6 5500 C3's 15-20+ years old.I use them exclusively as my striper/hybrid trollers, always a couple in the boat.I have a 6500 C3 also but it just collects dust.If you're in the market I just seen some on Ebay very competitively priced.Just my opinion here, look for the all silver reels with flat knobs gray in color.I've had much luck with these, the reels that have the black stickers around the reel and the handles have black round knobs not so much..........I only have two of these and both brokedown years ago.I do not know what the exact difference is,maybe years of manufacture??? Maybe someone else can chime in here.

Good luck

They are great, I have retired my 5500s, 6500, and C3 for Cardinals/Revo's due to their weight. The 6500 was my grandfathers, and my oldest 5500 was my first reel purchased in 89; and these are smooth. Do not overlook the Black Maxx (red & black) if trying to save money. My son had one laying around the garage for years, and I am impressed with it.
