Tomorrow I'll be going to my first ever catfish trip and I was wondering what Do's and Don'ts I should follow. I have some experience fishing bluegill or panfish so that might help me but I'm not sure. Just looking for answers from people who know their craft.

Biggest advice I can give a newby is to keep it simple. Don't try to overcomplicate things. I would start with your normal fishing gear and set up a simple Carolina rig. If you can catch a few bluegill or panfish, use those as cut bait. If you have a net and can catch shad, that would be ideal.

You need a heavier rod for catfish and a Stronger line at least 20 lb test and a leader line of at least 50 lbs I use 50 lb zebco omnifex because it's strong and cheap .you also need a no roll or bank sinker if you using using a sinker slide I use the ez sinker slides by bm because you can remove or put them on without having to cut your line .look on YouTube for different kinds of catfish rigs and how to make them and as for bait if targeting eaters you want some type of stink bait or livers .if you want trophy catfish you need cut bait like shad or blue gill .night crawlers with catch catfish too but it's hard to keep the blue gill away from them unless your trying to catch blue gill for bait . If you fishing for flat heads I hear live bluegill or bullhead will work.

Sorry for taking a day to respond but it was bust. We were in such a rush that we didn't even bring fishing poles so we just hung out on the boat for some hours and found a duck hunting spot for the future. Sorry for the unfortunate news bit thank you to everybody who replied to my question with great advice. Hope the next one goes better

These things happen. Also, check out Lynn's Catfish Calendar if you are trying for Yellows, Blues, or Gator Gars.
