IN Rockport for a few days. Have a lit pier available. How do you fish it? live bait....artificial ... or what. It is all new to me.
Any input appreciated.

Free line a live fish of some kind. I’d use light line, 6-8lb and an octopus hook. Pinfish, piggy perch, and croaker are good, but I find a 4-6” live mullet is the best option. If the mullet doesn’t seem to want to go down in the water column, put on a small split shot about 18” up.

I have found for me personally that free lining live shrimp works best, especially if the fish are popping shrimp on or near the surface. Live shrimp are easier to come by unless you are good with a cast net. I also like to use my fly rod with shrimp imitation flies.

Will it work? Yes. But this time of year there’s too much bycatch using shrimp with all the pinfish and other smaller fish that are in the bay.
