Concerning rods/reels.. First off, whatever you have is better than nothing. I would say bait, location & presentation is more important. Anything that will hold 12-15lb line is good enough. I wish I still had them, but I gave a whole mess of 5500c3's away years ago to someone who needed some gear. If you can bass fish with it, it will work.
As for tackle, go talk to someone who fishes the lake your going to. Ask them what you would need, this will keep you from buying stuff that you don't need.
If you want to really cut down the learning curve, hire a guide and tell him your going to ask allot of questions. You will learn more doing this than anything else.

As far as rods on a boat, ugly stik has a striper rod which is very affordable, I use them as my live bait setup. Ugly Stik Striper RodFor live bait fishing, and trolling, I really like reels with built-in Line Counters, it makes it easy to get the presentation back exactly as the last time without doing math/counting. I run up to 6 rods for live bait, I use large minnows and/or live perch at whatever depth I see the fish on my finder. I use 2/0 circle hooks with 0.75-1 oz or egg sinker lead in a carolina rig with a 2 foot leader. I will be updating to 1.5-2.0 oz egg sinkers which will work better on windy days. For trolling I use umbrella rigs, with 0.5 to 1 oz heads with a fluke or other soft body plastic.
