Has this ever happened to you? I was looking for hybrids on a jig and a softbait fluke and I caught this guy. As I was pulling him up I thought, this is heavy enough for a hybrid bass, but seems sluggish. ![[Linked Image]](https://www.matthewbey.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/white-buffalo-net.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.matthewbey.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/white-buffalo-and-me.jpg)

Nice fish. Buffs apparently like to hang out under or around schools of hybrids or sandies to pick off the injured shad as they sink towards the bottom.

Yes it has happened a lot. Many of the lakes in Texas are full of buffalo and they eat a variety of food items. They are often accidentally hooked by anglers with crank baits. I target them with my fly rod. That is a nice buffalo you are holding.

Caught a huge one years ago at Choke Canyon. He was actually hooked in the mouth on a Rat-L-Trap. Thought I had one hell of a bass initially.

Awesome catch, congrats! I have never caught a Buff! Buffalo have become my favorite fish to learn about and fish for over the years. So many good things about these fish. Native To Texas. (Still ranks as one of the most popular commercial fish sold in Texas.) Taste unbelievably good if you like eating fish. Catch a small one and throw it on the grill, butter, garlic, grill skin side down. wow... They're a boney fish so you need to be careful when eating them this way. You could also fillet them normally and then score the fillets before deep frying which softens the bones so they can easily be consumed. Some people just eat the tenderloin after removing the ribs but that's very wasteful. Probably the easiest thing to do is fillet as usual, remove the rib cages and grind them up in a meat grinder bones and all and make fish patties. Incredible sport fish, probably the best odds of catching a fish over 30lbs for any angler in Texas. Contrary to what other anglers may tell you, you can catch them in creeks, small ponds, lakes, etc. Look for bodies of water that might have had run off from larger lakes, rivers, during flooding conditions. Fairly easy to catch, standard Carp techniques work, but they will also hit worms, cutbait, nuts, pellets. You can target them using the same bait, techniques you do when fishing for Carp, but the only thing you may need to change is your thoughts on the hookset. While you can sit back and wait for a run using standard bolt rigs, when I'm targeting Buffalo, at the first signs of any action I'm watching my line indicators closely. The up/down repeat without a run action, is more than likely a Buffalo sampling your bait. (I'm convinced many Carp anglers think this type of indication is smaller fish or turtles, but it also could be a big Buffalo.) Once this action becomes a bit more consistent it's time to help set the hook. You don't need to wail on it, just enough to help drive the hook home. I've found that Buffalo don't seem to care about being hooked too much, the larger fish will just sit there and act like it's no big deal. lol.. So it may feel like a snag at first. The fight of larger Buffalo is a bit underwhelming until you start getting it close to the bank then they will make a couple of runs and then it's game over. lol.. Go fish Grapevine near any of the marinas, chances are you'll tag into a Buffalo once in a while.

Ever so often, I'll hook up a carp or buffalo on a jig while panfishing with my 5'6" ultralight. What a blast!
