Funny this comes up...
We have our youngest daughter, got free tuition due to her father's military service. She went 4 years to UCSC and majored in Literature. We paid for room, board, food, books, etc. She didn't have to work for any of it. Shame on us. She's now working at a local cafe / bakery as the "shop girl." Wasting away all of her talents / schooling. She keeps touting that she's leaving for California, but reality sets in that she can't afford it. She's not applying her knowledge, but she's good at posting things on social media. AHAHHAHAAH
She can be more, but doesn't seem to the drive to do it. You let her get a degree in literature? Did she have a plan to use it in that field? I didn't let her, I provided my feedback. She picked it as it's her "strength." She kept spewing how she wants to be a writer, editor, etc. Now the only thing she edits is daily FB post for the cafe.

All I know is that it's totally out of control.
When I was at UT in the 60s, tuition in all state schools in Texas was $50/semester. Not per hour. You could carry as many as 21 hours for a total of $50. Tuition, fees and books would cost me about $300 (books were the big expense.) Room and board was the biggest expense of all. that was 65 years ago, really? come on man! Yes it was 65 years ago. What's your point? Do you think the high tuition rates are fees are about where they should be? Increaeses in tuition fees and books have far outpaced inflation from what I have read.

When I was at a&m from 89 to end of 93 I had 40k from my grandmother, at least that's what dad told me to tell people and that was all I was getting. With a bit of side jobs and some work in the summer I payed for everything out of that. 9 semesters to finish and had 1500 bucks left at the end lol. Now I lived in dumps mostly cause guys can get away with that. There was also plenty of work if you didn't want a regular type job, which I did not. Seems like the check I wrote to school was around 900 a semester and usually 300ish in books. I stayed in an Unaircondioned dorm the first year that was 236 bucks a semester. Ramen noodles and peanut butter sandwiches were a major amount of diet lol. There was always money for beer somehow, someway

Yet everyone talks about how “pretty” the campuses are. It cost a lot of money to build and maintain these Tahje mahals.
