Sounds like they were using the graphs for navigation- so basically too fast for the conditions. I don’t think boat captains get an instrument rating.

I could be totally wrong but they could have launched at twin dikes in the dark and tried to motor over to launch.

Bottom line. Graph problem reading wrong or not people need to use common sense when or when not to operate a boat in the fog. Safety for you and especially others is the most important thing to consider. If this was a tournament then it should have been halted until it was safe to run the lake which it probably was not. Also I’m sorry that the boaters got hurt but they used poor judgement in running that boat at that speed in those conditions. They need to be thankful that they did not get hurt worse or hurt someone else.

I could be totally wrong but they could have launched at twin dikes in the dark and tried to motor over to launch. Do Texas lakes have a speed limit before sunrise? Minimum planing speed From TPWD Although there are no numerical speed limits on the water, citations may be issued for excessive speed or reckless operation. Use common sense, and operate at a safe speed at all times — especially in crowded areas. Excessive speed is a rate of speed greater than is reasonable or prudent without regard for conditions and hazards or greater than will permit a person to bring the boat to a stop within the assured clear distance ahead.

I fish some lakes with clearly posted speed limits. So which is correct?

Well even per the above they were clearly speeding as they couldn’t stop in time.

For y’all who don’t do Facebook Do they ran up on that island in broad daylight? Do they ran up there in broad daylight? Looks like she is doing some cover for bad decision. It's terrible, but (12 News Story): Thick fog and low lighting contributed to the accident in which the boat struck Rattlesnake Island at about 5:40 a.m. Friday morning, according to Lindon Wood, Lead Ranger for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the lake.

Grateful that nobody was killed, or injured worse than they were....hopefully they both make a full recovery....they both, as well as all of us, and everyone else hopefully take this as a lesson to apply to our own actions and activities in the future

Wonder if his pal will sue him. Sounds like the guy was going too fast for conditions.
