My wife’s 2016 Ford Explorer with 152k miles needed a new water pump. According to 3 different local mechanics it was going to cost me in the $5k range to repair. They said they almost would have to pull the engine to replace it. Really said they’d have to remove the drive train and once they did that they would have to replace all gaskets, seals and timing chain among other things. So I look up the price of the Explorer in Kelly Blue Book and Carvana. They both valued the vehicle around $7k. $5k to fix a $7k vehicle was a no brainer for me.
She’s driven an Explorer since 1992 so I go look at Explorers and Ford has gone crazy with pricing. They are $50k-$60k new. We have looked online at other vehicle prices so I trek over to Sewell Lexus and find her a 2023 Lexus NX 350 Premium. It was used, had 10,026 miles. Long story short I got a much better vehicle for about $12k cheaper than I would have paid for an Explorer. And this little sucker has anll the bells annd whistles down to heat/cool seats annd heated steering wheel. She happy annd ans they say “happy wife happy life”. Any Lexus owners on here, good or bad reviews?

I would have guessed $500-750 tops for replacing a water pump.

The reasoning for this...The engine is mounted in a fashion that the belts, drives, pullies, are sandwiched between the firewall, wheel wells, etc. Easier / safer to pull and work than try to squeeze tools / hands into a minimal space.

I can't believe you even looked at newer explorers after the repair cost was quoted.
