I went yesterday with friends etu Ed, Lenahorse Larry, and neighbor Graham. We did not find fish in one of the usual best spots but found some at Cloud, Anchor, and Finger. But the ones we found were darn hard to catch. We tried various sizes of lures, and one place (in 18 to 19 fow) they preferred a #4 size Mepps. At most other spots I had to downsize to a #1 Mepps. Even then, with fish in clear view on sidescan, we could not get a fish on every cast. Most times for me it took several casts to catch one fish. I think I caught 3 in a row one time. The 4 of us fishing from about 8 AM to 2 PM eventually ended up with 81 fish: 69 whites, 4 short hybrids and one about 23 inches long, 4 cats, and 3 yellow bass. The many casts without a fish wore us out and we called it a day. Sorry, we didn't think to take any pictures.

For me, the best way to catch these hard-to-catch fish was to work the #1 Mepps like a #2. I had a 3/16 oz weight about 17 inches up the line. Once it settled to the bottom, I took up most of the slack, pointed my rod down and to the side, and jerk started the retrieve and then reeled to keep the spinner spinning for 2 to 6 turns of the reel. Then let it free fall back to the bottom and repeat. Most of the fish we caught were in 11 to 15 fow and I would crank the #1 2 to 4 times medium speed before stopping each drag. In the last spot, where we found fish in 8 to 10 fow, they wanted it reeled faster and longer - still using the #1 Mepps.

Another great report Dennis. Going to my home lake Friday, will try a couple Mepps and see how they work. Thanks for posting

That's a good, typical, finicky August pattern report, DC! You could have reposted Graham shirtless photo to make your report complete. Lol

I had jury duty on Monday and decided to fish 245pm to 745pm. Pretty much the same result where I marked good fish at the usual spots and tried a dozen lures and caught one only after many casts. I was stuck on 39 count for a long time and about to surrender and head in but i was determined to catch an even #40 fish. Well BOOM this 17 incher went for it, on a mepps #4, my pb white since my 17.25 incher back in 2012.. LoL
