Headed to San Antonio to take my grand kids boat riding and fishing on Canyon Lake. I understand there is low water. Any help on boat launches or lake obstacles would be appreciated. Unfortunately this is the only weekend we all can get together.

Find another lake and I’m not joking.

Braunig, Calaveras, Coleto Creek is a bit of a drive, Choke is about 1 hour south.

The problem with Canyon, only 2 ramps open and if you’re not there at 5am, the parking lots get full. Then if you park in a “non approved” area, they’ll tow your truck & trailer. It’s real bad now, since it’s water sports season.
If you were going in the middle of the week, it would be fine.

i have not been since it's super low, but when it's full it's a pretty dangerous lake up towards the river. lots of timber. only lake i've ever had issues with in central texas with running into stumps

I have been on Canyon twice in the last two weeks but I am going during the week, not on the weekend.
I had no problems both times launching out of ramp #21 at Jacob's Creek. We arrived about 8:30 and left about 2 pm.
I stayed on the main lake and did not venture upstream. There are some shallow points that extend way out from the shore line in a few places, like the islands at Comal Park and one of the points at Jacob's Creek. Other than that, stay well away from the shoreline and you will be OK. We tubed for hours in the large bay that is just north of Comal Park. It is very deep there (over 60 feet) and the Comal Park shoreline drops off like a cliff, literally.

I have not fished Canyon so I cannot speak to that. For boating it is very nice and was not crowded at all the two days we went. Again, this was during the week. The water is clean with good visibility.

Given the other lakes in the area I have been going to Canyon by choice.
Medina Lake, which is closest to me, is out of the question since it is nearly empty which sucks because it's a great lake when full.
Choke is good for fishing but it is low and one needs to be careful about where you can go to avoid stumps. If you stay in the right areas you will be fine.
Braunig and Calaveras are also options but there have been reports of problems in the parking lots with theft; I do not know how that has been lately.

If you can go farther there are some other nice options like LBJ or Buchannan.

How far out of San Antonio are you able to venture?

I would go anywhere but Canyon. Already bad on weekends when full. Given the ramp situation it will be more trouble than it’s worth.
